Hi gang!***Kelly, what is the model # on that 10 gig drive? Thanks!***Bill P. What is the model # on the 6.5 drive? Thanks!***Andy, I dont know the answer to your question, but I hope someone tries to backup to a standalone CD-R or CD-RW , and lets us know!!***Harvey, I dont think the Vestax machines record as Wav. files. I think they record in a proprietary format. If anyone has tried this, please let us know!***I saw the ide orb drives for the first time in a local computer store today!SEE YA'LL! SCOTT

Vestax HDR-6
Hi All. Just back to recording on my HDR6 after a couple years away from it. Where oh where did I put that manual??? It'a a bigger problem than I thought...used to be a power user. Out of business, huh? Well, I can't get the effects to work. What am I missin? 3.04 chip. Do I select the effect before recording a track or are they global? DW

Hey gang, I have made my down payment on an HDREQ8-24 from Bertsch. I am now waiting...... If anyone would like to try my software out let me know. It is designed to control the mixers of up to 3 HDR-6's. I wish I had a screen shot of it but I don't. You can save snapshots to a file and load them back in. There is no machine control yet. If enough people are interested, I will figure out how to distribute it. Thanks. Happy hardisking.

I have been thinking of ways to get my tracks into my 'puter in sync, and thought that...if I was to copy the "count in" from the first track to the all the other tracks with the A/B function, and then transfer them analouge one track at a time to the PC. I could then cue the start of each track at the count in to sync them. Is this worth a try and what would be a good editor to do this with? thx harvey

Hey guys, I just picked up a Tascam TM-D1000 digital mixer which has eight TDIF-1 I/O's for use with TDIF-1 hard disc recorders. Is there anything I can do to my hdr8 to get it to record better than two track SPDIF with this mixer? ...Thanks very much. KooL site.

Mike I'd like to try out your software as well. ... I'll be experimenting with backing my HDR up to CD-R later this week, it should be interesting to see the results. ... I'm looking for a couple of larger hard drives for my HDR6 machines can anyone suggest a drive that works.

Hi all! Anyone ever have any sort of static or "pop and click" sound out of their V8? I'm running a V8 with a 1 gig and a 2 gig Hd inside. Now I get Pop and Click noise when I record that sounds like an old dusty LP being played. A bit annoying...

Kelly: My maual says to format the HD when that happens. The suggestion is to do it every 160 hrs. I do it every 50 or so. No problems so far. harvey ***********************8 Thanks Harvey. I did read that as well in the manual. I formated the HD, I deleated the whole HD using A/B method and I even recorded with all channels muted, but got the same results each time. However, it just dawned on me that I may have overlooked the 2nd drive usage coming into play. I'll try the above again with only one drive installed and see if that was the root of the problem.

Scott - [email protected] [Mon Aug 7 05:57:32 2000]

Mike, I am interested in your software, especially because you can save the snapshots. Why didnt they include a way to save the friggin snapshots from the HDRs is beyond me...(???)Has anyone figured out a way to do this?***Kelly, I had the pops and clicks on a couple of my V8s, and it was driving me crazy!I dont think it was the hard drives! I sent them to Bertsch to have them rebuilt. I hope you have better luck with this than I did. Hey Bill, Mike and Scott. Did you get my emails? My email software has been goofy lately so I am just double checking. For anyone else who is interested in the software, I will be putting together a disk to distribute shortly. The cost will be $5 to cover my cost of CD's and shipping. Happy hardisking.

***Kelly, I had the pops and clicks on a couple of my V8s, and it was driving me crazy!I dont think it was the hard drives! I sent them to Bertsch to have them rebuilt. I hope you have better luck with this than I did. Let us know if reformatting the HD works.*** Scott, Well, here is what happened: Reformatting a single hard drive installed did not clear up the problem. Thus, that was not the root of the audio evil. Being a former Computer technician, I decided to get off my arse and approach the problem from that vantage point... ie: put on my dunce hat and wave my old magic logic probe in the air and chant a few incantations such as ěSteve Case Sucks!î. Hey, donít laugh... this often worked in the past.... but it didnít this time.. I digress. Anyhow, in the process of removing and replacing the Hds mounted under the main PCB, I often would disconnect a few of the cables to allow better clearance while moving drives in and out. So, I deduced that I may have reconnected a few cables incorrectly. Viola! Such was the case. Next to the BIOS chips is a 15 pin port that connects four 3 pin style connectors. That leaves 3 pins not in use. The question then is which three? I left a pin in between each connector and that seemed to clear up the problem. Can anyone verify that that is how theirs is connected as well? I just to make sure. Also, tracing the above cables leads back to a rear PCB that serves for the 8 outputs and a few other external ports. Next to each connector on both upper and lower PCB is a jumper marked +4/-10. Mine are set for -10, but anyone in their right audio mind prefers to use +4 if using other pro equipment. Anyone else know about this? If what I see is true, then Iím sure the rest of the community would like to know that they have a choice of signal levels. Something I did not see in the manual. Or am I missing something here?

Thanks for the list of hard drives guys!.....6.4 to 10 gig drives should be a bit easier to find than the recommended 2.1 gig drives. I'm still trying to find time to experiment with backing up the HDR to different stand alone CD recorders....but damn, people keep wanting to pay me money to record their stuff and I just can't say no I want to go play with my toys now!!! ....Mike I did get the email thanks!

There are a shitload of HDRs on ebay right now. So if anyone is looking to expand their setup,go to ebay, and search on "Vestax". Heres another hard drive that works with HDR6: Western Digital 6.4 gig. Peace -Scott

Does anyone have a difinitive answer on the latest operating system for the V8? I'm currently using 3.15 and 3.14. 3.14 seems to be more stable. My main reason for upgrading is to increase the size drive the machine recognizes. I've read the posts regarding 10 gig drive on HDR6s. Wow, if I could stick two 10 gig Maxtors in each recorder I would be one happy digital guy! Thanks in advance for any thoughts. I love the machines. They sound great.

Scott - [email protected] [Sun Aug 13 07:15:33 2000]

Don,the latest Vestax V8 operating system is 3.15. Bertsch (the actual makers) have a 3.20 chip for it, call them for details. I dont know if it will recognise any more than 8.4 gigs. As far as I can tell, 8.4 gigs is probably the limit on all the Vestax HDRs. I have a 10 gig Maxtor in one of my V8s, but it only uses 8.4 gigs of it. I had a 20 gig Maxtor in a V8, but it only got the 8.4 gigs...If anyone has got more gigs than 8.4 on any Vestax HDR, please post.

HDR6
Here's an interesting thought I've had for a while......we know that we can record 4 tracks simultaneously on a single HDR6 by using both the analog and digital inputs. Has anybody tried to sync two machines with the coax connector and then try to record digital tracks to the slave machine through the optical input as well??

Mike E - [email protected] [Sun Aug 13 17:52:44 2000]
HDR6
Hey Mike D, I don't think that will work because you will get the digital output from the master deck comeing in on the coax. You might be able to mix the dig out from the master with the dig in from the optic input but I'm not sure that this would be useful for much of anything. I beleive I have my software ready to go on floppy's if anyone else is interested. The cost will be $5.Email me if you want one. This is strictly a beta version. Definitely a no frills version. Happy hardisking

V8 & 6
As many of you know, Iíve been dealing with (or dicking with) a noisy V8 lately. The symptoms were the dreaded "pop and click" noise when playing back a recording. Also, my headphone amp was acting weird in that one side was always loud while the other side was filled with static noise. The suggestions described in the manual did not work. However, all the problems went away after I spent a few minutes taking each cable connector off and adding a little liquid "Tweek" to each prong and then reconnect to the PCB. Using Tweek was just an added precaution, but not necessary. I also popped each chip and cleaned their contact legs and then reinserted them back into their respective place. The basic idea was to clean and/or improve all the contacts and connections. Once I was done, I turned the V8 on and all was like new again. Even the headphone amp worked fine. This is something that is likely to happen to everyone as their HDR connections get dirty over time. Caution: "Tweek" is a clear liquid that enhances connectivity between metal contacts. Use sparingly as any splash over between adjoining contacts or prongs will act as a solder joint. Donít use tweek on any of the chips or their legs. Also, I spoke with John Bertch the other day concerning my V8. He confirmed that the two rear PCBs had jumpers that allow you to choose between +4 or -10 on all the in and out ports.

Can someone give me some Point a to z info on hook up to sync 3 units (hdr-6, hdr-8, & v8) Which one is best for controlling / set up on each unit, etc. I don' t have a separate controller, so I would be controlling this from one of the units.

Dudes!Does anyone know where to get a TDIF card, or ADAT card for the Vestax HDRs? (Ya right!) Anyway, I am wanting to be compatible with ADATs and Tascam machines. I scored big on a Specrtal Translator, which converts between ADAT (ODI), Tascam Da88 (TDIF),Y2 Devices(Yamaha 8 track digital recorders and Yamaha digital mixers), and Spectral SMDAI format, which is used in Spectral DAWs. Anyway, if I can get into one of these formats, from a HDR, then I am compatible with all of them. Anyone have any ideas? Has anyone out there used the TDIF or ADAT cards? Does Bertsch still sell them? All of the aforementioned formats are capable of sending and recieving 8 channels of digital audio in 2 directions at the same time. The SPDIF on the HDRs is a stereo digital audio signal, different from the ADAT ODI lightpipe format, which uses the same toslink type optical connectors, but is 8 channel bi-directional. I think it is possible to go thru the SPDIF ports on the HDR, into an ALESIS AI, convert to ADAT ODI, then into the Translator. But it would only be a 2 channel at a time tranfer....Hmmm, anyone having any experience with this, please post....***I am waiting for my V8, hopefully it comes tommorrow, and hopefully, I wont be late for work again, waiting for that UPS guy...who is running later every day, it seems...***Kelly, thanks for the great info on your last post!!!***Davy L, I use a HDR6 as the master, it seems to work best. Also, the V8 should be last. The digital out goes to the digital in, on the next machine in the daisy chain. Midi thru goes to the midi in on the next machine in the chain.Set the slaves on "slave". Now record your ass off!***Hey Mike, I'd love to give your software a try. By the way, can I have your new Bertsch machine?? Seriously, let us know how it works out. And what is it? A 32 track? What did you pay? Well, Hasta La Vista,Baby!!-CS7

Hey Scott, my new deck is the HDREQ8-24. It is the mature version of the V8 according to Mr Bertsch. It is an 8 track machine with 24 bit A/D.He said that all the bugs with the V8 have been worked out on the HDREQ8-24. He also told me that the midi controller numbers should be the same as the V8. This means that any software I develope for it should also work for the V8. We will see. Happy hardisking.

Dudes! I got my friggin V8 back from Canada, finally! It took a few trips across the country and back, though, on its way. I opened it up, and here is what it says on the NEW IMPROVED POWER SUPPLY...P 120V 60Hz Top...273-1512-LR63462.....BEI B1512T 95/43....S 25.2Vct 2A Bottom....This is for the new power supply that will work with the larger hard drives, probably works in any Vestax HDR. If you know what the letters and numbers all mean, please share it with the rest of us.Anyone know a scource for these? Let us know! Thanks!-CS7

Well I mailed off my final payment to Bertsch yesterday for my new deck. For $200 I upgraded it to a DPR824 which includes a compressor, gate, de-esser and a ducker(whatever that is) on each track. I felt that it was well worth the $200 for all that cool stuff. This brings the total purchase price to $2299. I believe that I should have it in my grubby little paws in about 2 to 3 weeks. It is comming COD which could be a shock pricewise. The timing should be good because I have a weekend off from gigging coming up. I will let you know when it arrives. Happy hardisking.

Waaaaazuuuup!!!! Hey gang! Sorry... I have been away in a hole for a while! I just finished the MSR3. Yes! those of you who remember that unit We were working on a single rack mount 3 bay ORB drive that will work with HDR-6/8s and other systems as well. Thanx to all of you who keep the HRDC alive. We are merely a Mic for all of you, its up to all of you to do the voice. I will be in Vegas again at Comdex, LA at NAMM and San Francisco at MacWorld promoting the MSR3. But as always the HDRC comes 1st for the news. Also all of you who do not know! We have a music sound board to upload your music, let us all hear what you are doing with your HDRs. You know you want people to hear your music so show it off. Our member toll is up in the thousands and so much is going on. For a short time you can call me at 888.657.8452 and tell us what are you doing with your HDRs and any questions you may have for John Paul as I try to get an interview for the up coming update. I cannot call everyone back so please understand. And to the others I have talked to I have not forgotten you. Happi Recording! P.S. Scott! "You Rock!" Sorry to single you out but you do!
