Moore and Fayette Qualify for State

At the sectional track meet, Doug Moore and Billy Fayette qualified for the state track meet in the 3200 meter run. The two harriers, who have been leaders for Hinsdale Central all season, ran together for much of the race, along with Mike Janusek of Lyons Township. The finish was dramatic as Moore outkicked Janusek and Fayette crossed the line just fractions of a second beneath the automatic state qualifying time of 9:33. The final results has Moore running a four second PR of 9:31.6, while Fayette broke the school sophomore record, which stood for 28 years, en route to a nine second PR of 9:32.7. Both runners will compete in the state finals this Saturday in Charleston, Illinois.

Hinsdale Takes 5th at Sectional
While no other Red Devil's qualified for the state meet, it was an outstanding day for the Devil's distance squad. Every single member of the Devil's distance team ran a PR! The 4x800 team of Fotis Pappas, Matt Tweardy, Alex Orton and Eric Olson ran a seasonal best by over five seconds and ran the fastest relay time of the Westphal/Kupres/Lawrence era, finishing third with a time of 8:08.2. Though this team of three seniors was disappointed to come so close to a state meet berth, these men have nothing to be ashamed of and very much of which to be proud. Junior Pappas ran a team and personal best of 2:01.3, Tweardy ran a lifetime PR of 2:01.7, Orton ran a great third leg in a PR of 2:02.5, and Olson anchored with his own PR of 2:02.6. It was a fitting end to a great career for Tweardy, Orton and Olson. At meets end, it was clear that the Devil's distance squad had represented well after finishing 3rd in the 3200 relay and placing two runners in the 800, 1600 and 3200. Sophomore Azad Darbandi won the first heat of the 800 in a lifetime best of 2:05.5 to finish fifth, and Olson ran a surprisingly strong second race to finish 6th in 2:05.6. Moore and Fayette came back in the 1600 and placed 4th and 5th to contribute six more points to the Red Devils, who finished 5th overall at the meet with 42 points.

In both the 4x200 & 4x400 meter relays the Red Devil’s earned bronze medals. The 4x200 relay included senior Ivan Davis and juniors Vinnie Malik, Victor Twardarski and Chris Kiser. This quartet covered the distance in 1:32.7, which was a seasonal best. In a thrilling, yet heart-wrenching finale, the 4x400 relay finished an agonizingly few tenths out of 2nd place and just missed the qualifying standard. Victor Twardarski (52.6), sophomore Ben Cherry (51.9), Chris Kiser (51.7) and Ivan Davis (51.3) were in the mix all the way and competed well. This relay, too, ran a seasonal best of 3:27.5.

Other Red Devil performances included:

• Freshman record in the open 200 meter dash by Connor Furlong (23.4)
• seasonal PR’s for Junior Jordan Cray (53.5) and Sophomore Elliot Wilm (54.3) in the open 400
• seasonal PR’s for Junior Alex Fitch (16.9) and Sophomore Mitch Green (16.9) in the 110 High Hurdles
• PR in the 300 IH Hurdles for Mitch Green (45.4)
• Junior D’Mitri Mackall finished the season with PR’s in both the Long and Triple Jump (18-10 and 39-05 respectively)

Davis, Devils bringing healthy outlook to sectional

Senior Ivan Davis isn't just a sprinter for the Hinsdale Central boys track team this season. He's a survivor. The returning state qualifier in the 800-meter relay has managed to be a steady veteran for a sprint corps that has more than had its share of injuries.

On Saturday, Davis led off the 800 relay with juniors Victor Twardowski, Chris Kiser and Vinnie Maliakkal that took third at the West Suburban Conference Silver Division Meet at York in 1 minute, 33.62 seconds fully automatic time.

The Red Devils finished sixth with 18 points, but had several performances that gives them hope at qualifying entries for the Class 3A state meet at the Lyons Township Sectional this Friday, May 22. Top-two finishers and entries that achieve qualifying standards in the meet advanced. Field events start at 5:00 p.m. (long jump, discus, high jump and pole vault), prelims start at 5:15 (100m, 110m HH, 200m and 3200 slow section) and finals will start around 6:15 p.m. Just to be safe parents should get there by 6:00 p.m. The first final is the 3200m relay.

Devil’s Compete at McCarthy Invitational – Moore Goes Out a Champion

In the last home meet of the year, the Red Devil’s finished 7th out of eight teams in a loaded field at their annual invitational. In several events, the winning marks ranked among the top results across the state of Illinois.

Perfect weather and great competition propelled several Devil’s runner to personal best times, and in the case of senior Doug Moore, the meet was one he will not soon forget. Moore outkicked five competitors in the final straightaway of the 1600 meter run to become the Devil’s only individual champion of the night. His time of 4:24.4 is the fastest time run by a member of the team in this event since 2005 (when Kyle Somerfield, older brother of current team members Brad and Jeff Somerfield, ran 4:19), and was a personal record by 7 seconds. The 1600 was also notable for the performance of Sophomore Billy Fayette. Fayette finished 3rd in 4:26.7 and missed breaking the school record for Sophomores by less than one second. Both Moore and Fayette will look to earn berths to the state meet at the upcoming sectional meet on May 22.

Moore and the other senior athletes of the team were briefly recognized in a pre-meet ceremony. Several of these seniors had outstanding performances at the meet. Ivan Davis won a silver medal in the 100 dash running a personal best of 10.9. Senior Andrew Silk ran a personal best time of 10:16.8 to finish 7th in the 3200, while Matt Tweardy ran a P.R. of 2:02 as leadoff for the 4*800 relay team. His teammates Azad Darbandi, Drew Justus and Eric Olson helped the team to a fifth place performance of 8:26. The 4*400 team of Victor Twardorski, Chris Kizer, Connor Furlong, and Ben Cherry also ran a seasonal best time of 3:29.6 to finish 6th in a very strong field.

The Devil’s will next compete at the West Suburban Conference meet hosted by York High School this coming Friday evening.

York to Host West Suburban Conference on Friday

The West Suburban Conference will be held this Friday, May 15 at York High School in Elmhurst. Mark your calendar and be sure to come out and cheer the team on. Additional information will be provided shortly.

Mark your calendar! May 26 is the date for the Hinsdale Central Track Team Awards Banquet starting at 6:15 p.m. at the Oaks Hotels and Conference Center located at 300 S. Frontage Rd., Burr Ridge. Invitations have gone out, so check your mail box. All track and field athletes are welcome to attend with their parents. It is a time to honor the seniors and recognize all other athletes.

Central Competes in Talent Laden Invite

The Red Devil's traveled to the campus of Glen Ellyn Glebard West on May 2 to compete in the 28th Annual Jim Arnold Invitational, one of the deeper invitationals across the state. This was a great opportunity for the men to line up against a very talented field from the sprints, jumps, relays, throws and distance events! Overall, there were several breakthrough performances and terrific marks for the harriers and as the weather continues to warm up performances and times will start to drop precipitously.

Event Summary

Sprints:
The 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 relay’s are beginning to gel for the Red Devil's who competed respectably in all three relay events. At the frosh/soph level the 4x100 relay raced well finishing 7th place while just 1 second out of 2nd place. The 4x200 & 4x400 relays ran exceptional placing 2nd in both events as well as posting seasonal best marks. Matt Connor, Ben Cherry, Dakota Limjuco and Connor Furlong covered the distance in 1:36.45. The 4x400 raced to a fine time of 3:39.10. This quartet was made up of Connor Furlong (54.1), Azad Darbandi (55.2), Elliot Wilm (56.1) and Ben Cherry (52.9).

At the varsity level, the 4x100 which included Ivan Davis, David Banasiak, Chris Kiser and Richie Zajeski covered the oval in 44.75 while the same quartet posted a seasonal best of 1:33.9 in the 4x200 relay. Both relays finished 8th & 7th respectively. Rounding out the sprint events included juniors Victor Twardarski (53.4), Jordan Cray (54.7) as well as sophomore Max VanMallinckrodt (56.1) competing in the 400 meter dash. Sophomores Mitch Green (17.86/46.9) and Zach Daleen (18.5/49.6) just missed the finals in the 110 High Hurdles and both came back later in the meet to compete in the 300 Low Hurdles--Green posted PR's in both events. Junior Alex Fitch also competed in the 110's and 300 Low's finishing in 18.2 and 48.1 respectively.

Middle/Long Distance:
Doug Moore and Billy Fayette posted big PR's in the 3200 meter run placing 2nd & 5th respectively in the varsity event. Moore closed well in the final 400 meters and almost pulled out the win finishing 5 tenths behind the event winner. His 9:35 is a ten second seasonal and life time personal record. Billy Fayette also posted a big PR as his fine 9:43 eclipsed his previous all time best by 18 seconds. Billy just missed the sophomore 3200 meter school record of 9:41 by 2 seconds set all the way back in 1981. Sophomore Azad Darbandi continues to impress by placing a solid 3rd in the 800 meter dash (2:07). Eric Olson scored a personal record in the open 800 as he finished in 2:06 while Drew Justus ran to a time of 2:11. Zac Withal scored another gold medal running alone for much of the race in the sophomore version of the 3200 meter run. Zac finished in 10:16 and freshman teammate Ted Owens completed the deuce in 10:52. Rounding out the distance performances were freshmen Jack Feldman breaking the 5:00 minute barrier for the first time (4:59) and sophomore Brad Somerfield also scoring a lifetime PR crossing the finish line in a time of 5:00. Senior Alex Orton and junior Arash Darbandi also competed in the 1600 meters finishing the metric mile in a time of 4:49 and 4:53 respectively.

Sophmores Take 3rd at Devils Invite

The Hinsdale Central sophmores took third place with 86 points at the Red Devils Sophomore Invite held April 29. Placing first was Downers Grove South with 184 points and in second place was Hillcrest with 162 points. Taking first place in the 1600 meter run was Zac Withal with a time of 4:46.10. Both the 4x400 and 4x800 relays took second place with times of 3:44.40 and 8:38.10 respectively.

Registration for Summer Camp Now Open

Hinsdale Central's boys cross country summer camp registration is now open. The camp begins Thursday, June 18 and ends Thursday, July 30. Practice is from 7 - 10 a.m., Monday through Thursday. On the first day of camp, runners are to meet at the outdoor track. Cost is $125.00 per runner.

To register, fill out the 2009 Summer Camp High School Registration Form before June 1. There is a $15 late fee if the registration form is received after June 1. Devil's Look to Outdoor Season after Conference Meet

Sophomore 4x400 Sets School Record

Hinsdale Central finished 7th on the Varsity level and 5th at the Sophomore level at the Indoor Conference meet, hosted by Proviso West High School on Friday, March 20. Sophomores Billy Fayette and John Skokna were the highest finishers for the Devils, earning 2nd places in their respective events. Fayette ran a personal record of 10:01.9 for a runner-up finish in the 3200 and then came back two hours later and ran his second personal record time in the meet with a 4:36.8, good for 6th place in a highly competitive 1600. Skokna tied for 2nd in the 200, running 24.4, after finishing 5th earlier in the meet in the 55 dash (where he ran a time of 7.02). Two Sophomore relay teams also earned all-conference by finishing in the top three: the 4x200 team of John Skokna, Connor Furlong, Ben Cherry and Jack Connor finished 2nd in 1:38.6, and the 4x400 team of Lenny Zavala, Furlong, Cherry and Jack Kelly ran 3:42.8, earning a third place finish and smashing the school record by three seconds. The 4x800 team of Brad Somerfield, Pete Stubbings, Sam Ricker, and Ted Owens also earned points for the team, running 5th in 9:10. Notably, all members of the 4x800 team ran personal bests.

Several other Sophomores earned all-conference honors: Zac Withal in the 3200 (4th in a personal best time of 10:06), Ryan Daleen in the high and low hurdles (6th in 9.08 for the highs, and 6th in 8.5 for the lows), Azad Darbandi in the 800 run (5th in a personal best time of 2:10.1), Jack Kelly in the 400 (6th place in 56.4), Mitch Green in the low hurdles (5th in the low hurdles in 8.2), and Bill Monat in the shot put (5th in 39'03").

On the Varsity level, the Devils had to overcome some untimely illnesses and rough exchanges; despite this adversity, several individuals had notable performances. Leading the way was Arash Darbandi, who earned 4th in the 3200 run with a personal best time of 9:57.7. Rich Zajeski earned a 5th place medal in the 55 dash, running a time of 6.77. Victor Twardorski ran an indoor personal best of 53.5 to earn 6th place in the 400 dash. And Mike Rogers earned 6th place in the shot put with a throw of 44'03." The Devil's also placed in two relays. The 3200 relay team of Matt Tweardy, Doug Moore, Eric Olson, and Drew Justus finished 5th with a seasonal best of 8:29, while the 4*400 team of Ivan Davis, Twardorski, Chris Kizer, and Rich Zajeski finished 4th in a seasonal best of 3:34.4. The 4x200 team of Davis, Mick Culligan, Kizer, and Zajeski would have finished 3rd, but was unfortunately disqualified for running out of the exchange zone. All three relays have set realistic goals of earning a trip to the state track meet in May.

For the next two weeks, the Red Devil's will focus on intensive training and will make their outdoor debut at the Hinsdale Relays on Saturday, April 11.

Devil's Run at Dual of Districts

Gold Medals for Darbandi, Cherry and Daleen

The Red Devil's tuned up for this Friday's West Suburban Conference Meet by competing at the annual Dual of the Districts this past weekend. The competition provides a rare opportunity for usual rivals Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South to join forces and compete against Downers Grove District 99. The highlights of the meet are the two "combined relays" in which two Hinsdale Central runners join two Hinsdale South runners to compete against a team featuring two Downers South runners and two Downers North runners. For District 86, the meet both started and ended with nail biting excitement.

In the first race of the evening, Senior Eric Olson dove across the finish line a mere .1 seconds in front of a runner from Downers Grove South to give the Hinsdale district the victory in the 4x800 meter relay. A short time later, Zach Withal crossed the line to bring District 86 a much less anxiety-inducing win in the Sophomore level 4x800. The 4x400 at the end of the meet also concluded in dramatic fashion, with Sophomore Connor Furlong taking his turn to dive across the finish line to bring District 86 yet another .1 second victory, this time in the 4x800. The Varsity team, alas, could not hold off an impressive Downers performance, becoming the one mixed relay not to emerge victorious.

In between these two exciting relays were a few major highlights for the Devil's in what was largely a low-key meet intended to provide an opportunity for Red Devil athletes to enter different events than they usually compete in. Ryan Daleen won his first race of the season in the 55 Low Hurdles, running 8.5. He was followed .1 seconds later by Mitch Green. Azad Darbandi easily won the 800 meter run, taking the lead early on and coasting to victory in 2:17.8. And Ben Cherry earned a win in the 400, circling the track two and half times in 57.4 seconds to edge out his competitor by fractions of a second.

On the Varsity level, no Hinsdale runners earned gold, but strong performances were turned in by Kyle Henshaw (2nd in the 3200 run in a personal best of 10:31), Jordan Cray (2nd in the 400 in 57.4), Ivan Davis (3rd in the 55 in 6.8) and Matt Tweardy (3rd in the 600 in 1:34.3, after running a leg on the winning 4x800 team).

Devil's Pick Up First Double Victory Of The Season

Frosh/Soph and Varsity both earn victories in 5-team home meet

On Friday, March 6th, the Red Devil tracksters hosted Benet Academy, Grayslake Central, Marmion Academy, and Roosevelt High School. At the meet, the Varsity team won their first competition of the season outscoring Benet 89-69, while the Frosh/Soph team continued their impressive season by easily defeating second place Grayslake 140-43. The Red Devils took gold in five of the six relay events, and earned gold medals in 12 individual events.

Leading the way for Hinsdale was Sophomore Mitch Green who won three events and took fourth in another. Green once again won the hurdle events (8.6 in the low hurdles, 9.3 in the high hurdles) and also had an impressive debut in the jumps, earning first in the triple jump (33'4") and third in the long jump (15'11.5"). Teammate Dion McNeal won the long jump, earning his first ever gold medal with a leap of 16'3". Connor Furlong also had an impressive meet, tying the freshman school record in the 200 where he ran a first place 24.7 seconds. Furlong added a second in the 55 dash (7.0), finishing right behind teammate John Skokna (6.8). He also joined Jack Kelly, Lenny Zavala, and Max Von Mallinckrodt on the first place 4x400 team.

In the distance events, Sophomores Billy Fayette and Zach Withal once again led the way. Fayette ran a leg on the winning 4x800 team (along with teammates Azad Darbandi, Tom Lyons and Taggert George) while also crossing the line in first in the 600 (1:37.5). Withal easily won the mile in 4:50.9, while Darbandi ran a personal best of 5:03 to finish third. Finally, in the shot put, Sophomore Matt Brooman set a personal best of 32'2.5" to earn fourth place for the Devils.

On the Varsity side, first place finishes were earned by Jordan Weed in the 3200 (10:58), Alex Fitch in the 55 Low Hurdles (8.2), and Doug Moore in the 600 (1:33.6). In addition, Rick Zajeski and Ivan Davis TIED for first in the 55 dash (6.6). Zajeski also took second in the 200 (23.8) while Davis finished fourth (24.6). Moore also added a victory in the 3200, where he was joined by Jordan Anetsberger, Andrew Silk, and Arash Darbandi. In the field events, Yu Cheng Yang earned silver in the long jump (leaping 18'2") and Mike Rodgers picked up bronze in the shot put with a throw of 44'.25".

Several junior varsity runners also had breakthroughs in the meet. In the 1600 meter run, 14 Red Devil runner set personal record times. Freshman Arjun Reddy and Jack Feldman broke 5:30 for the first time (Reddy in 5:23, Feldman in 5:27) while Jeff Somerfield dropped his personal best by over one minute by running 5:35. Joe Berg, T.J. Collanto and Alfredo Lopez-Yanes also established themselves as legitimate contenders for breaking the 5:00 barrier by all crossing the finish line together in 5:09.

Devil's Compete at Highly Competitive Proviso West Invitational

The Varsity finished 10th and the Frosh/Soph team finished 4th at the 12 team Proviso West Invitational on Saturday. Feb. 28. The meet, which featured traditional track powerhouses such as York, Neuqua Valley and Lake Park along with traditional conference rivals Lyons Township and Downers Grove North, provided the Devils with high caliber competition which allowed several members of the team to attain personal bests in their events. Despite the lack of individual standouts, the Devil's had a solid team performance, earning points in all three relays on both the Varsity and Frosh/Soph levels.

On the Varsity level, the 4x200 team of Ivan Davis, Vinnie Maliakal, Chris Kizer, and Rich Zajeski placed the highest of any the Red Devils, earning third in a time of 1:36.5. Zajeski, Kizer, and Davis later joined teammate Jordan Cray to lead the Devil's to a 5th place finish in the meet's culminating event, the 4x400 relay. The 4x800 team of Doug Moore, Matt Tweardy, Eric Olson, and Foitis Pappas earned 5th place in a highly competitive field with a time of 8:30.8. Pappas later earned the Devils a point with his sixth place finish in the 600 meter run (1:29.8), while Tweardy and Moore both set personal best marks in the mile run (Moore in 4:38, Tweardy in 4:43). Finally, Mike Rogers set a personal best mark for the second week in a row by throwing 45'0" to take 6th place in the shot put.

On the Sophomore level, the Devil's finished 1 point out of third place and were once again led by strong performances from Billy Fayette and Mitch Green. Fayette set two personal best marks by finishing second in the 3200 in 10:09 and second in the mile in 4:39, while Green earned a silver in the 200 Intermediate Hurdles (28.3) and added a 5th place finish in the 55 High Hurdles (9.3). The 4x200 team of John Skokna, Connor Furlong, Jack Connor and Ben Cherry finished a strong second with a time of 1:38.7, while Jack Kelly replaced Connor on the silver medal winning 4x400 team (3:46.4). The 4x800 team of Azad Darabandi, Will Meyer, Brad Somerfield, and Zac Withal finished 4th (9:03) while Darabandi earned the team a point with his 6th place finish in the 800 (2:14) and Withal earned a point by finishing 6th in the mile run with a lifetime best time of 4:49.

Frosh/Soph Team Wins Big at Proviso West Quad

The future looks bright for the Hinsdale Central Boys track team, if the results of Friday's Proviso West Quad are any indication. The Red Devil's scored an impressive victory at the Frosh/Soph level, rounding up 132 points to easily outpace competitors Schaumburg (76), Prospect (64), Downers North (55.5) and host Proviso West (25.5). The Devil's received gold medal winning performances in six events and two relays. Billy Fayette led the charge with victories in the 800 (2:12.9) and 1600 (4:53.3). Mitch Green also earned big points for the Devil's by winning both hurdle races for the second meet in a row (9.4 in the high hurdles, 8.8 in the low). John Skokna cruised to a big victory in the 200 with an impressive time in the 24.7, while Zac Withal earned his first ever high school victory, winning the 3200 run in 10:35.9. In the relay events, the Red Devil's won by large margins in both the 4x200 and the 4x400. Matt Connor, John Skokna, Ben Cherry, and Connor Furlong each ran legs on these victorious relays.

Davis, 4 x 400 Team Lead Varsity
On the Varsity level, the Devil's finished 4th in the five team meet with 49.75 points. Prospect emerged the victor with 101.75. Highlights for the Devil's included Ivan Davis's victory in the 200 meter dash (24.3) and a come from behind victory by the 4x400 meter team of Vinnie Maliakal, Jordan Cray, Victor Twardorski and Chris Kiser. Twardorski, running the 3rd leg, made up a 30-meter gap on two of his competitors and retained a slight lead before handing off to anchorman Kiser. Kiser then held off a fierce challenge from Prospect's anchor to give the Devil's their first 4x400 victory in recent memory.

Other top performances came from Davis in the 400 (2nd in 55.4), Doug Moore in the 3200 (3rd in a personal best time of 9:55.9), Drew Justus in the 800 (3rd in 2:13.6), and Mike Rogers in the shot put (4th in with a huge new personal best of 43'9").

Victories for Zajeski, Stubbings, Green, and Darbandi at Opening Meet

The Hinsdale Central Boy's Track team opened their season Friday night by hosting the Little Four Invitational. The Varsity team finished third in the four-way meet with 46 points behind Downers South (107.5) and Downers North (71). Oak Lawn finished fourth (32.5). On the Sophomore level, the Devils emerged as runner-up to Downers South.

Several members of the Devil's track team had notable performances, led by Senior sprinter Rich Zajeski who took gold in the 55 dash with a time of 6.5. Zajeski also ran a dramatic anchor leg in the 4x400 relay, making up 30 meters on Downers South before faltering down the final straightaway. His split of 54.1 is the fastest clocked by a Central runner this year.

Key performances were also turned in by Chris Kiser who tied for second in the 400 dash (56.5) and ran a leg on the runner-up 4 lap relay, by Doug Moore earned second in the 800 meter run (2:12), and by Andrew Silk who had a breakout race in the 3200 running a personal best time of 10:35. Earning bronze medals were Alex Fitch in the 55 High Hurdles (and who has shown tremendous improvement since last season), Max Maas in the Pole Vault (tying a personal best jump of 9'0") and Foitis Pappas, who turned in the surprise performance of the day en route to a 4:49 mile.

Promising signs for the future were shown on the Frosh/Soph level, where several Red Devil runners won gold medals for the very first time. Peter Stubbings is no longer a stranger to the victory stand after beating all his opponents in the 3200 run (11:47). Mitch Green was a double gold winner, taking first in the 55 high hurdles (9.5) and the 55 low hurdles (8.7). Azad Darbandi was one of three Hinsdale runners in the top 4 of the 600 run, winning in 1:40.5. Darbandi earlier helped Hinsdale pick up the gold in the 3200 relay, along with teammates Billy Fayette, Will Meyer, and Zac Withal. Fayette also earned gold in the 800, Meyer also earned a silver in the 600, and Withal broke 5:00 in the mile for the first time and earned bronze in the 1600.

A major highlight for many of the Red Devil fans was watching the Weight Men's relay run to gold on both the frosh/soph and Varsity levels. The winning frosh/soph team featured Eric Jaugey, Ryan Callen, Bobby O'Mullan and Alex Kerekes, while Gabby Morales, Leo Bezanis, Cole Chana, and Mike Rogers represented Hinsdale on the Varsity level. Great job, gentleman.

Help Support the Boy's Track & Field Club

Help support the 2009 Hinsdale Central High School boy's track and field team by joining the Track & Field Club with a $50 donation payable to Hinsdale Central Track Club. Your donation enables the program to buy equipment, uniforms, purchase end-of-the-year gifts for senior members and coaches. If you didn't get a chance to hand in your check and club's application form at the Jan. 22 Parent/Athelete meeting, there is still time to do it. Just download the online appliation form, fill it out, make you check payable to Hinsdale Central Track Club and have you son bring it in to one of the coaches.
