Head Coach Jim Kupres joins the Red Devil coaching
staff for his fourth full season as an head track coach. He also
serves as the boys assistant cross country coach. Kupres gained
experience in the sport by serving as a graduate assistant coach
at the University of Illinois-Chicago from 1997-2002. Additionally,
he served as a four-year Cross Country and Track & Field manager
under Gordon Thomson at Loyola University of Chicago from 1987-1991.
In addition to his coaching duties, Kupres is a school social worker
at Hinsdale Central High School. He and his wife, Sheri, have three
children Sam (4), Sarah (2½) and Rachel (born 9/1/08).
Kupres earned his undergraduate degree in Business Management (Loyola
University-1990) and Master of Social Work (Jane Adams College of

Assistant Coach Jim Westphal is in his fourth year
as assistant coach for the Red Devil track team. He is also the
head boys cross country coach. In addition to his coaching duties,
Westphal teaches in the Educational Services Department at Hinsdale
Central High School. This will be his 12th year in education and
high school coaching. Prior to coming to Hinsdale Central, Westphal
served as an assistant coach in the sprints and field events at
Glenbard West High School from 2002-2005.
After graduating from Oak Park & River Forest High School, where
he was the 1987 3200 meter state champion, Westphal moved on to
Loyola University and was a four time All-American in Cross Country
and Track & Field. He also competed in two Olympic Trials (1992
& 1996) as well as three World Cross Country Championships as
a U.S. World Cross Country team member (1994-1996).

Assistant Coach Noah Lawrence attended York High
School and competed for four years on the track and cross country
teams and was team captain of the Cross Country team in 1997. Lawrence
earned his bachelor’s degree at Grinnell College and ran four
years in the track and cross country programs, earning several conference
championships. Once Lawrence graduated he taught social studies
and coached track and field at Lamoni High School in Lamoni, Iowa
from 2003-2004.
Lawrence earned his M.A. in Social Studies Education from the University
of Iowa, while serving as a volunteer assistant track and cross
country coach for the Hawkeye’s. He began teaching social
studies at Hinsdale Central in fall of 2005. He was also the individual
champion of the 2002 Mad City Marathon (Madison, WI) and has run

Assistant
Coach Nick Gebhart is beginning his second year at Hinsdale
Central as a Physical Education teacher. It is also his second year
with the track team, as well as a special team coordinator for the
football team. He started out his coaching career in 2001 at Driscoll
Catholic High School; assisting in winning five consecutive football
state championships. Aspiring to different challenges, Gebhart coached
at Niles North High School for one year before coming to Hinsdale
Central. He received a B.A. from Carthage College and an M.S. from
Northern Illinois University.

Assistant
Coach Brian Griffin is a 2003 graduate of Hinsdale Central
High School. He was an All-State Defensive End for the 12-1, 2002
team. He received a B.S. from Wheaton College, and is beginning
his first year teaching Algebra and Geometry at Hinsdale Central.
This is also his first year as an assistant track coach. Griffin
is also an assistnat coach for the football team.

Volunteer
Assistant Coach Luis Vargas is currently Student teaching
at Hinsdale Central High School in the Physical Education Department.
In 2000 he graduated from Elmwood Park High School where he competed
in Cross Country, Wrestling, and Track for four years. He attended
the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana for two years with a
focus on exercise physiology. Shortly after, Vargas earned two national
physical trainer certifications and has been a personal trainer
for over six years at Bally Total Fitness and Lifetime Fitness.
He specializes in sport specific conditioning and nutrition.
Luis now attends Northeastern Illinois University where he is enrolled
in his last semester in the Physical Education Program with a minor
in Health Education and is expected to graduate after the spring
