Classic Village Trip 16 Days:
GORKHA
DISTRICT: (CENTRAL NEPAL)
The Gorkha District is an area well known to many both here and abroad for its
rich history and exceptional Gorkha soldiers. Located in the central part of
Nepal this hilly region was home to the late King Prithive Naranaya Shah. His
rule began in Gorkha and from there he created what is now the present day Nepal.
The latest King of Nepal is the 11th generation of King Prithive Naranaya Shahs.
Gorkha is easily accessible to the
visitor by a main road which connects to the district head quarters. Here one
will see some spectacular views off in the distance (weather permitting) of
the Himalayan Mountain Peaks, including Manasalu, the famous Annapurna Range,
and Langtang. From this point, trails branch off leading towards different villages
in the area, and one will pass through lush green jungles and hills sprinkled
with flowers. Gorkha is an excellent place to do bird watching.
Early in the morning and later in the afternoon one should take the time to
experience the magnificent sunrises and sunsets over the mountains. It will
be a life time memory. The largest ethnic groups that populate this area are
mainly the Gurung, Magar, Brahmain and Newaris. Each group has it's own unique
language, food, dance, music, customs and traditions and yet even with so much
diversity the people live side by side in harmony and still retain their individuality.
The Gurung and Magar people two
main religions (as with most of Nepal) are Hinduism and Buddhism and the local
languages are called Gurung and Magar. Specialty foods prepared during the festival
times include Sell Roti, (a donut shaped bread) Gundruk (a dried vegetable dish)
and Khole (a thick soup containing meat). Throughout the remained of the year
the national dish is Dal Bhat (a combination of rice, lentil soup, assorted
vegetables, pickles, curd and sometimes meat). Weddings, births, deaths and
religious occasions are presided over by either a Lama (Monk) for those of the
Buddhist faith or a Pandit for those following the Hindu faith.
There are many villages in
Nepal where you can visit.
You should smile more!
