Lovesong

Hear It!

(3:54 / 936k)

'Lovesong' was the first song written after the "Itch!" album. Mark wrote the lyrics and also came up with the chord progressions for the song. In November of 1994, John was living in a small studio apartment in Manhattan (SoHo district), but he had planned to move to Florida at the end of the month to pursue a love interest. Mark came to New York for John's farewell party, but arrived early for a chance to visit. During this visit, HBI recorded 'Lovesong'. Later that night, HBI gave a rare live performance and debuted 'Lovesong' for the party. Several other HBI songs were also performed that evening.

At that time, it was uncertain what would be done with this song. John and Mark were both busily persuing different goals, and the idea of a third album seemed very unlikely. So, HBI tucked 'Lovesong' away in the vault with the understanding that, if they ever did get to make a third album, this would be one song already in the can. Seven years later, the can was opened.

(Side note: in 1997, John landed a regular gig playing mellow acoustic instrumentals for the dinner crowd at a resturant in Florida. John pulled most of his song set from a collection of jazz standards, but a few HBI tunes made it on the list as well. For over a year, 'Lovesong-- the acoustic instrumental' was played every Thursday night for a live audience. Mark may not know about this...well, he does now! JH)

I'm so in love with you
I don't know what to say
It's always the times like this
That words get in the way

If there were something I could do
To show you how I feel
Some way I could prove to you
That my love for you is real

I'll write for you this love song
So keep it in your heart
And sing it when the nights get long
And know we'll never really be apart

It seemed an easy thing
To try at first
To put my feelings down
In notes, chords and verse

It was harder still
Than I ever knew
Just to let you know
My feelings about you

I'd like to take you away
Where the world could never find us
And hold you day after day
Put all our troubles far behind us

But till then
I'll write for you this love song
So keep it in your heart
And sing it when the nights get long
And know we'll never really be apart
And know that I'll always love you
