Ultimate Handbook |
Ultimate is played on a rectangular field comparable in size to a soccer pitch, with an endzone at each end. Regulation dimensions are shown on the diagram below. |

Each point begins with both teams of seven players lining up in front of their respective endzones. The defensive team throws ('pulls') the disc to the offensive team and play begins. |

The offensive team scores a point by catching the disc in the defense's endzone. Teams change ends every point with the scoring team, remaining at the end in which they scored, initiating play with a 'pull'. |

No player may run with the disc. The player with the disc, the 'thrower', has ten seconds to throw the disc whilst the 'marker' counts out the stall count. |

5. |
A change of possession occurs when a pass is not completed, i.e. the disc lands out of bounds, is dropped, blocked or intercepted. This is a 'turnover' at which point the defense gains possession of the disc and becomes the offense. |

6. |
A team can make unlimited substitutions. These can be made after a point is scored or during an injury timeout. |
7. |
No physical contact is allowed between players. If contact is made, a foul occurs. |
8. |
When a foul disrupts possession, the play continues as if possession was retained. If the player committing the foul disputes the call, play will return to the previous pass. |

9. |
Ultimate is a self-refereed sport. Players are responsible for their own foul and line calls, and resolve their own disputes. |
Ultimate stresses sportsmanship and fairplay, known as the Spirit of the Game. Competitive play is encouraged but never at the expense of respect between players, adherence to the rules, and the basic joy of play. |
