International establishment of Children's Museums has shown an 81% increase in the past 10 years. The first Children's Museum was opened in Brooklyn in 1899. |
Currently there are only 6 Children's Museums in Canada - none east of Ottawa. These Museums are located in Gatineau, PQ; Winnipeg, MB; London, ON; Waterloo, ON; Victoria, BC. There are also two Science Museums in Canada - British Columbia and the Discovery Centre, Nova Scotia. |

While both types of Museum are accessible to all children, regardless of ability, the fundamental difference between a Children's Museum and a Science Museum is the target age group. Science Museums are typically of interest to children over the age of 7. A Children's Museum caters to children of all ages, especially toddlers and preschoolers, allowing them to explore and discover their world, at their level (literally), at their own pace, and in their own particular learning style. |

As a non-profit business, Children's Museums are dependent upon volunteers from the community who have a love of children and learning, in addition to the core staff and board of directors. |
Structurally, Children's Museums use natural light as much as possible. Bright colours, open floor plans and large east facing windows create a healthy, bright environment in which to stimulate a joy of learning. |
Children's Museums generally see 100, 000 to 1, 000, 000 visitors each year - children and adults. They are widely used in the US for school trips during inclement weather, as well as by church and youth groups for special events. |

Children's Museums form partnerships with community businesses to establish exhibits, products and programs. Many Children's Museums have formed partnerships with local IMAX, movie theatres and other local nature, entertainment and arts centres, allowing members to enjoy a discount at select events. There are also the benefits of a regular newsletter, members-only events, unlimited yearly admission, Museum store discounts, and advanced booking for special programs. |
As a community based facility, the Children's Museum will benefit not only the children and families that visit the museum, but also the local business and tourist community. |
