| Different from the rest of the world where soccer or football seen to be the most popular sports, Americas favorites include football, basketball, hockey and, of course, baseball. People all over the world know how most of these games are played or at least know what they are. However, it is intriguing that America is the world leader or owns the best professional teams in each of these sports. The best in the world gather in America to compete in the most competitive and lucrative leagues. The Canadian and Russian influence in the NHL has been apparent for years, hispanics and Asians are finding success in MLB, and the recent influx of European players in the NBA are evidence that these American leagues are becoming representative of the best of the world, rather than the best of America. American students are privileged to have the opportunities to be student athletes. Actually, it's more than just being able to play but being even encouraged to do so. There are opportunities to receive athletic scholarships. Athletes in school teams are often required to maintain certain GPAs to be able to remain on the team. Often times, playing sports in America is considered an extra-curriculum activity or hobby. Therefore, having the brains to be in school and be an athlete at the same time is definitely looked upon favorably. |
| What comes to your mind when someone asks you what you know about Korean sports? What is considered a Korean sport? Ever since Taekwondo became a part of the Olympics, many people in the world are more aware of this Korean martial art. The numbers of Taekwondo classes are growing even in America. Many Koreans take pride in this famous sport for its uniqueness and success. Korea, as well as other parts of the world, favors popular sports like basketball, volleyball, soccer, and baseball. Football would be the only sport whose American popularity is not mirrored in Korea. Still, its just starting to grow popularity and become the new trend in the Korean sports. Koreans love baseball as much as Americans do. Many Korean baseball players have been very successful both domestically and abroad. Koreans also love archery, golf, marathons, short-track skating, and more. However, Korean students don't get the opportunity to be student athletes in the truest sense. Koreans take education very seriously and one must choose between education or sports. If you choose sports, your life is going to be dedicated to sports instead of academics. It's unfortunate for those who want to study and play team sports at the same time. Therefore, most Korean athletes are only professional athletes. |
