Active Skills are abilities and/or skills that must be togged on and off. Introduction
World of Warcract will offer many types of spells and abilities to players. Below is a description of each of the possible types (Im am not 100% sure if these will exist in the game, they are just generalized types of spells/abilities that are offered in pretty much every similar game out there). To make this easier to understand, im going to seperate the spells/abilities into two parts: Effect, and Delivery. Each spell has an effect that it does (i.e. Damage over Time), and a way that is is delivered (i.e. cast as an AoE).
Spell/Skill/Ability Effect Types
Direct Damage (DD): Anything labled Direct Damage is an ability/spell that deals damage instantly and all at once. Direct Damage spells and abilities more than often deal the most overall damage as they allow the caster to focus all of their power in a single hit.
Direct Over Time (DOT): Damage Over Time applies to spells/abilities that deal a set ammount of damage over a set ammount of time. The damage is dealt in 'pulses' and will be dealt in a set ammount of time/pulses. For instance, it may be 5 damage for 5 total pulses in a 30 second time period. Or just be 5 damage every 6 seconds for 30 seconds. DOT's are extremely usefull in groups, you can cast a DOT on every target, then focus on them with DD's on the main target, while the DOTs weaken the HPs of the other monsters until its their turn to die. While working solo, DOTs are very usefull as they allow you to be doing even more damage. You cast your DOt, then use DD's to finish them off.
Direct Heal: Direct Heal pretty much explains itself. Heals a player directly for a set ammount of HPs.
Heal Over Time (HoT): Heals a target for a set ammount of HPs over time.
Drains: Drain spells are those that take something from a target, and give it to the caster.
Buff: Buff spells increase a stat or give a stat to the target. Can be an increase to defense, attack, or an ability stat.
Negative Buff (Debuff): Debuff spells decrease a stat on target. Can be an decrease to defense, attack, or an ability stat.
Damage Shield: Damage shields are spells that create a harmful barrier around the target. The spell doesn't always boost the armor of the target, but it will deal a harmful effect to any enemy that manages to make contact with the player. Such as damage, or a slowing effect.
Spell/Skill/Ability Delivery Types
Area of Effect (AoE): Any spell or ability that effects a targeted area while having a range is an Area of Effect spell. Note: I am considering Chain Lightning to be an AoE spell, as it effects multiple targets that are a certain distance from eachother.
Bolt: Bolts are a special type of spell. As it can be combined with other types of delivery system, as well as effects. It itself is a missile type spell. It usually has a longer range, and does more damage (as it can miss, and can't often be used inside of combat as the target is moving around). Bolt spells are best used as an opening move. Because once the target is in combat, they are hard to hit with a missile spell. They are also usefull as the spell won't do its damage until the missile has made its contact, allowing the caster to start casting another spell. Bolts often have a long cooldown timer.
Point Blank Area of Effect (PBAoE): Point Blank Area of Effect spells are similar to AoE spells. The spell effects an area point blank around the caster. Auras are a type of PBAoE spell. PBAoE spells are much stronger than a normal AoE (for balance purposes, the spell does more damage due to the fact that the caster has to be within weapon range). More damage in return for a higher risk.
Shout: A Shout ability is something that instantly, with out the need of casting, delivers the effect to the target. Not often a very strong spell (for balance purposes, its kind of unfair to have a Shout that deals as much as a casted DD). Shout spells often have a longer cooldown timer.
