What are lovebirds ?

The species commonly called Lovebirds but Latin or scientifically called "Agapornis" comprise of a very diverse and colorful group of parrots from Africa. The African Love Bird is unusual in that some species are relatively new to the world of Aviculture, while others are very old. In fact, several species were not even discovered until this century, yet others have been kept by man as pets for over 100 years as you will find out when you read the history section of GTLoveBird.

The playful and very inquisitive nature plus the small size of the species Agapornis make them a very ideal pet especially when they have been hand raised.

The lovebird is a short, thick-bodied and short rounded tail parrot and is about 5 to 6 inches long from head to tail. A lovebird has a relatively large beak for it's size and the basic color of the species is green.

Why call them lovebirds ?

Love Birds acquired their name because of their fondness for sitting in pairs as close together as possible while sleeping, resting or preening each other’s feathers.

A few basic facts to remember about Love Birds are
1. They are small in size.
2. they originate from Africa and its adjacent islands.
3. All Love Birds are members of the parrot family.

This stout little parrot comprises a total of nine different species. While some species are nearly as common as budgies, others remain as rare as the most elusive bird in the wild.

These small parrots are popular with both bird owners and Professional Aviculturists.
