Where to Buy Lovebirds ?

I am guessing by now you just like me have fallen in love with lovebirds and are wondering where you can buy one....? Look no further because I am now going to tell you where you can buy your lovebird.

Pet stores and breeders

Most people will go to a pet store to find the lovebird they would love to buy because usually there are helpful knowledgeable staff on hand to help you with the questions you may have. You need to go to a variety of breeders and pet shops to shop around for the best price and the bird you like, Never see one bird and say I want that one before looking around other sources.

Always buy first-quality stock. In general, large stores such as Petcetera do not have quality, hand-fed lovebirds. Look for local stores that get birds from good breeders or breed their own birds.

It is best to buy lovebirds that are bred in your country. Imported birds are usually older, more nervous, and had to be placed in quarantine. Local-bred lovebirds are accustomed to living in captivity, and to the local climate, people, and food.

Never buy a smuggled bird, even if it looks healthy and is very rare. Smuggled birds, which are mainly imported from Africa, may carry many diseases and are a threat to health of other birds.

Do not buy birds without first examining them. Don't buy a bird from the Internet and then get it shipped to you. You have no idea if the bird is of good quality. Do not respond to an ad in the paper without first researching the breeder. These sellers are not regulated, so you have no idea of what you are getting.

Be careful if the birds are being sold for an extremely low price, or if there is no information about where they come from, how old they are, or if they are hand-fed. Ask pet owners or a vet to find out if the place has a good reputation or is well known for its lovebirds.

You should always look at the lovebirds and the condition of the cages they are staying in to see if they are healthy active birds. The things to look for when searching around for your lovebird in pet shops and breeder aviaries are the following -:

- Clean cages.
- Clean food and water containers.
- Un-cramped cages.
- The diet the lovebirds are fed on.

The prices of lovebirds in Pet shops and breeders aviaries should be around the same price and the conditions that the lovebirds are in should immaculate otherwise I would recommend waiting until you found a source of lovebirds where the conditions where better.

Adopting Lovebirds
Adopting a lovebird is another option. There are many great pets at the local animal shelter. However, these birds may be very scared of humans and may be hard to tame. You may also adopt a bird from someone who can no longer keep a pet. Observe how the bird interacts with its owner, and make sure that it meets the criteria for a healthy lovebird.

Bird Clubs
If you are wanting a lovebird and haven't been able to find one in a pet shop or from a breeder you should talk to the local bird club to see if anyone has any lovebirds for sale or knows anyone that does. Either way with bird clubs you will be sure to find a lot of knowledgeable lovebird fanatics that can help you on your quest for lovebirds.

Bird shows
One other place to find lovebirds for sale and also to meet other lovebird owners is at a bird show. Bird shows are places lovebird owners show off their lovebirds in hopes of winning a prize for having the best looking lovebird; along with the competition side of bird shows there is also the lovebirds for sale.
