Worm Farms

Watch the eyes of the children as you demonstrate how to make a worm farm.

We want to help younger children enjoy the ecology.  Instead of a fish tank or other more conventional choice, we choose making a worm farm.  The children loved holding the worms and watching them twist and make tunnels.  They asked questions like, where are their eyes, how do they eat, and how do I take care of the worms.

Evaluation

This was a simple service project. It was the first for some of our younger scouts.  We began by contacting a after school care facility and collecting the needed materials.  Several of the girls then demonstrated making the worm farms in front of the eager young children.  We took a cleaned 3 liter pop bottle and cut the neck (where it starts to narrow) almost completely off.  Leave only a small piece of plastic attaching it to the bottom.  Fill it 2/3 full of garden dirt.  Put coffee grounds, egg shells, leaves or other compost type materials for the worms to eat.  Add  two or three worms.  To maintain spray with water to keep moist once a week and put in a dark cool place.
