Ask Questions Later (aql.wad) Alejandro "Dooks" Duque September 14, 2001
Another more or less E1 themed level, with pretty good architecture and good action. It's pretty short. A problem, though, is that while there's a lot of rockets and cells, the actual guns are hidden (I never found 'em, at least), and you need the firepower at the end. Overall, not the best map out there, but not too bad, either.

Aquila Daniel Jenkins October 13, 1995
This level is structured around a circular outside area, with staircases leading to rooms around the perimeter. It's quite similar to
Airwalk.wad (which I need someone to upload to the archives for me, 'cause it's not in there). Texturing is random, and action ain't that good. To be fair, it's meant for Deathmatch. 2/5

Arachna Bjorn Hermans November 1, 1995
A medium sized level, taking place inside a church. Theme is pretty consistent, mainly metal/marble, and architecture is pretty nice, including a really neat spider floor pattern. Action is pretty good. Overall, a fun WAD with some neat architecture.

Area 53 (Area53.wad) Adam Jacob Czarnecki August 25, 1998
Another crappy level set. Action is mediocre, texturing is random and bad, and level design consists of hallways (yes, hallways). The secret areas consist of rooms filled (to the square inch) with power-ups. The ONE nice area is in the beginning of E1M3; you might want to check it out. E1M1's new music is pretty nice. E1M4's is the Mission: Impossible theme. Arg.

Area_Hidden Death2 (area_hd2.wad) Kyle August 5, 2002
Large, empty rooms, random and bad texturing, bad design, bad action.

Arena Tony Hayes April 8, 1994
A very large, square-ish arena, littered with power-ups and enemies. Action ain't that great. If this intrigues you, check it out, but otherwise skip. Granted it's meant for Deathmatch.

Arena3 Bruno Vergilio November 8, 2003
A simple, small E3M8 replacement. It's about on par with the original, maybe better, as it looks nicer. Unfortunately, it throws in a Cyberdemon, so it's not a perfect replacement, but whatever.

ARENA O' DEATH 1.2 (ArenaDth.wad) Roberto "SATCH" Sanna January 14, 1995
A large, square, marble arena, with an assload of guns, ammo, and monsters. It actually manages to be kinda tough. Try it out for a quick spin.

Armory Doug Branch June 21, 1994
This level is base with some demonic influence in one wing. Base part is mainly E1, with some gray. Texturing is random in that it skips around between the different base styles. Design is pretty good, and action is good as well. There are a lot of well-hidden secrets (half the map, as a matter of fact). A fun map overall, it should appeal to nostalgia hunters, secret hunters, and your average Doomer alike.

The Artifact (Artifact.wad) Paul Schmitz December 30, 1994
This is a really nice though somewhat flawed set of three levels. It was originally one huge level, but the author decided to break it up. As a result theres backtracking to previous areas, which gives it a nice flow and coolness factor. The first and second levels flow into each other especially well. The first level has a sort of compound with an outside area and a water cave maze. The second is set in a canyon and has some really neat level design. The final level is based in a fortress of sorts. (Youre supposed to die at the end, by the way.) Texturing is somewhat random at times but still good. Architecture is actually pretty good, with a lot of invisible platforms in the last level. (jDoom messes some of them up, so you may want to consider using another port.) Action is really good, and quite tough at times; there were definitely a few moments where I found myself saying Oh, shit. Theres tons of secrets as well. The main flaw with this level set however is that it depends a lot on switch flipping at times, with no obvious cue as to what they did. Its also possible to get yourself stuck. Overall though its a really good level set with awesome action and some sweet design.

A rush of blood to the head (ARush.wad) Oswaldo``Joaquin Zuniga January 1, 1998
This is supposedly based on the authors house, and if it is, good for him, cause its fairly extensive. It plays better than most house WADs, because youre actually limited in where you can go via keys and switches. Action is also interesting because for the majority of the level you only have a shotgun; theres a good fight at the end, too. But on the whole the architecture is nothing special, and neither is the level. Enjoyable, but not really memorable; only if you really like house WADs I guess.

The Ascent (Ascent.wad) Halleck de Montigny April 18, 1995
This WAD is pretty nice. Texturing is gothic marble/metal/wood or a silver base theme. The last part of the level looks *really* nice.  Action is good. Unfortunately, there's one part that could give some trouble (in figuring out what to do). When you get to the computer room, look for the all-silver column. That's the lift. Fun stuff overall, check it out.

ASDOOM Andy Sheppard August 23, 1994
Another level set that could have been cool, but sadly wasn't. It starts off nice, in caverns with a half-built base. E1M2 is alright, but it's only a sewer in that there's ooze and drainage vents. E1M3 begins the trend of the levels not making sense, which continues until E1M7. E1M3's design isn't exactly all that great, but the texturing is really neat, and worth checking out just for that simple fact. E1M4 begins another trend that is also carried until E1M7: boring, mazy levels that really aren't fun. E1M9 is okay, but there's at least a neat star floor pattern used a bunch. E1M5 and E1M6 are long, boring, and unfun. E1M7 finally raises the quality back up; it takes place in a storage hanger of sorts; it's also not mazy. E1M8 is your typical finishing level, so there's not much to be said there. Texturing is generally adhered to in-level, but from level to level there's no coherence between texture sets. Check it out for E1M3, and maybe E1M1, E1M7, and E1M9; definitely skip E1M4-E1M6.

Assault on the Demons (aslthq.wad) Anthony Uzilov March 3, 1997
This is a medium-sized level, despite the claims of the text file. Structure and theming is random, though the author was nice enough to strategically use teleports to keep down backtracking. Action is good. Some sort of fancy trick was used on an ooze river that pissed of jDoom (or was it glBSP?), so you might want to pick a different port for this one.

REVENGE OF ASMODEOUS : Episode One - Mission One (Asmo1_1.wad) Marty August 30, 1994
AHA! I finally come face to face with my old enemy. While not quite the WAD I thought it was at first, this damn level was ubiquitous in wad packs in the Maximum files. And I cannot understand why for the life of me. This level is abysmal. It consists mostly of square, boring, STARTAN rooms. The texture set hardly changes; its a classic example of bad E1 style. Action sucks, and theres a maze composed of about 200 two-sided lindefs that slows down my computer and/or crashes it every single time, no matter what time period or era, no matter what computer. I hate this fucking WAD.

REVENGE OF ASMODEOUS : Episode One - Mission Two (Asmo1_2.wad) Marty September 5, 1994
This, too, was another of those WADs you just couldnt shake. Its decidedly better than the first, with slightly better action and more varied design. It does have one cool area with an inverse pyramid of sorts. But on the whole, pretty lame.

ASSENT Mike Albanese August 2, 1994
This is an off-grid, badly designed, shittily textured WAD with pretty easy action. For some strange reason I found myself vaguely amused (in the basest form of that word) but still:

AT_WORK Bradley Allen June 29, 1994
Right off the bat, I'd like to note that we now have two office levels released pretty close to each other that are both on E1M6--because the authors both like the music. Coincidence? I think not. Onto the mini-review. This level is supposedly based on the author's workspace. I can it being a real place a bit more easily than in 9-to-5, but I still only really see it in the south side (the entrance); the north half is pretty non-sensical. The texturing is pretty random, but usually looks good. The level is basically one of those big non-linear types from back in the day, though despite this the action is pretty good. Basically, if you liked 9-to-5, you'll like this, and if not, you probably won't like it.
