"What's going on here and Why is everyone screaming in the hall of the ICU?" Dr. Fitzgerald questioned as he came down the hallway.
Before the staff could say anything Mary spoke up and said "Dr.!! We are Greg Sander's family and when we left the ER this morning our family member was in good shape as we were told by the ER doctor. When we came for visiting hours as instructed and were directed here we found Greg in this condition." Mary pointed to Greg "And this is what we found when we came here. None of us were informed at all that Greg had been transferred from Emergency, let alone that his condition had caused him to be in ICU. What do you have to say about that?"
Dr. Fitzgerald just stood there for a minute and then he took Greg's file
from Nurse Crackett, before saying anything.
"Your brother's condition worsened while he was in the ER this according to his chart happened around 11:00am that was when he was transferred up here. I see there was no notification that you were called to let you know his change of status and I am personally sorry for that. I will have the appropriate staff members reprimanded for that personally." Dr. Fitzgerald explained, than continued "The reason your brother is from the Pneumonia mostly but also because of the medication given to him for the ear obstruction."
"The only question I want to know is will he be all right?" Emily angrily asked her temper getting the best of her.
"Yes, Mrs. Sanders Greg will be fine within the next 24 hours. We gave him a medication called Graval which is commonly used for air sickness but a much stronger dosage than is in the over the counter strength. That's the reason why he looks so bad." Dr. Fitzgerald explained.
"Between the pneumonia and the medication he lapsed into a mini coma but also that will help out both conditions. It will let him build up his strength from the pneumonia and because he is so relaxed the blockage will remove itself that much more quickly."
"What about the catheter Doctor why's that in use?" Nick questioned.
"That's because Mr. Sanders was dehydrated from the pneumonia and also besides the medication being given to him we are re-hydrating him as well and the catheter has been inserted to check his urine levels" Dr. Fitzgerald answered looking at Nick.
"Can you tell us with 100% assuredly that Greg will be fine?" Nick asked.
"Yes I can, I ran a full set of chest x-rays already and the pneumonia is
under complete control and tomorrow morning depending on his condition I am going have another cat scan run to check the blockage in the ear drum. By tomorrow Greg should be well on his way to a full recovery." Dr. Fitzgerald said.
"Thank you Doctor I appreciate all the information you have given us, now can we all go in and stay with Greg?" Emily asked.
"Yes you may." Dr. Fitzgerald said with a smile "I wish all my patients had family like you."
"Also Doctor could you arrange a bed for me to stay with Nick tonight? I don't want him alone and his Mother and sister have traveled a long way and I want them to get some sleep tonight." Nick Asked.
Before either of them could make an argument Nick said "Look you have been through a lot since last night and your both tired and I don't want you both getting sick yourselves with worry by spending the night sitting in a cold hospital room. I want you to go home and sleep there. Besides I work the graveyard shift so I am great for being up all night. I'm used to it."
"The only way we will agree to this is if you will promise to call us the
minute he improves deal?" Mary asked.
"Yes of course I will." Nick answered.
"Now will you to go and get in there with him, I need to call the team and tell them the update there not going to be happy." Nick sighed.
He asked the nursing staff for a private phone to call the police dept.
This got there and the doctor's attention immediately.
"You want to call the police dept about Mr. Sanders?" Dr. Fitzgerald asked with uncertainty.
"Yes Doctor I do Greg and I are Criminalists for LVPD Graveyard and
swingshift respectively" Nick explained showing his and Greg's id to the doctor. "Our boss and the rest of the team want to be updated regularly on Greg's condition and none of them including Captain Jim Brass will not be that impressed about the lack of communication in Greg's case about his condition I assure you."
Nick left to use the phone to call everyone.
When he returned he found a third chair had been brought into the room and he moved it and took Greg's hand in his tears silently falling from him onto Greg's hand.
