Martha Wegner was a schoolteacher and was certified to teach 13 different subjects.   She taught school at Rison, Kingsland and Grapevine.  She also taught Sunday school at the Rison Methodist Church.
She had a green thumb and could grow just about anything, and frequented flower and garden shows.  She had several fruit trees in her yard including a fruit-cocktail tree with 5 different types of fruit trees grafted together.  She also had a mock orange tree that actually grew miniature oranges!
She raised chickens, rabbits and goats.  Each Easter, the Easter Bunny could be found in her yard.   Grandma Wegner taught several of her granddaughters to crochet and made beautiful shawls for her daughter, daughters-in-law and granddaughters.   She loved teaching.  Much of her creativity can be seen today through her grandchildren.    Although she was small in stature (She claimed to be 5"2" but was actually only 5"1 3/4 inches), she left a large impression on all who knew her.
Martha Elizabeth Wegner was killed in a car accident on May 23, 1972 close to New Edinburg.  She and Chris are buried in Greenwood Cemetery.
In the letter from Lucy, When we were grown, Mother generally didn't sit in on any of our card games.  She would rather sit in her rocking chair and watch the antics of my brothers and me and anyone else who got into the game.  She really enjoyed our hi-jinks and there were many.  The night before her funeral, to break the tension and grief, we broke into an impromptu card game and it seemed as though she was in her rocking chair, again laughing at us.  I believe her presence was real that night.

Children of Chris and Martha:

1. Lucy Martha m. Jim Gillespie

2. Chris Henry m. Mattie Nell Jaggers (currently residing in Cleveland County.
Their oldest child, Patricia, was the first baby delivered at Cleveland County Hospital)

3.  Fred Benjamin m.  Willie Jo Granderson

4.  Robert Lee (Bobby) m. Barbara Davidson

Fred Wegners entire family resides in Cleveland CountyFred was elected to the Quorum Court of Cleveland County in 1994, and continues to serve as a JP.  Freds youngest daughter, Wendy, is a Kingsland City counsel member, and is the most like Grandma Wegner in stature and is her only grandchild that is a schoolteacher.  Wendy has a crooked smile and we often wondered where it came from.  That mystery was solved when we came across some old photographs of Lucy Robins and Elizabeth Sloan.  There was Wendys smile, looking back at us from old faded photos of our great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother!

Each year Lucy, Chris, Fred, Bobby and their spouses, as well as a few of their children & grandchildren, get together for their annual Christmas get-together/poker free-for-all.  The love of card playing in the Wegner family must be in the blood and will undoubtedly continue for many more years to come.
