| Much of the information on this website was taken from a family history book compiled by my sister, Leisa Wegner Hobson, with her permission. The letter below is found on the first pages of that book; I can only hope this website will do all her hard work justice. Christi Wegner-Herron |

| To My Family: I have always been intrigued with the Wegner side of my family, probalby because I never knew much about them. My Wegner family has always been a mystery to me, and I can't let a mystery go unsolved! Hence my search. I have spent about 1 1/2 years on this, so I decided to call a halt. It will never really be finished, because time keeps marching on, but I believe it is as complete as possible for now. Our family is larger than I expected, and we cover the USA from the North to the South, the East to the West Coast, and still in Kiel, Germany from whence we came. I have been in contact with every branch of our family tree, and I thank you all for your help in providing information. Working on this project has renewed many relationahips with my branch of our family tree, and I have been fortunate enough to meet many more dear family members-especially Dolly Lischer (a fascinating lady), Barbel Larson (our German cousin) and the Henry Wegner clan. With the typical Wegner modesty, I can say we are a great bunch of people! I apologize for any errors found in this book. While I can't go back and change every copy, I would like to know if you find any errors or can add to any of the information I have here. You will find instances where names seem to be spelled incorrectly. I have found many inconsistencies on vital statistic records, but I chose the spellings that were most consistent, or from that person's own signature, as in the case of Karoline Wegner Moritz (from her immigration papers). A little about our name: The surname Wegner is a comparatively rare name (as we all know) and appears to be occupational in origin. It is a German name and means one who made wagons; a cartwright and a dweller near a path. Any of us who has born the name of Wegner is well aware that it is almost always misspelled and mispronounced. WE ARE NOT WAGNERS! Our Wegner ancestors were middle-class farming people, with the exception of Ernst Wegner who was a salesman. They were fighters, hard workers and survivors. Today we still have several framers and some in sales and marketing. Many are in meticulous detail professions, such as computer programming, engineering, electricians, nursing and accounting. Some are more people-oriented, such as teaching and public relations. Many things I found in common among the Wegners -- great sense of humor, playing cards, fun-loving and very intelligent (of course!). Another trait I found in common is that all our ancestors didn't talk about their past. That is so frustrating! Dolly Lischer is our oldest living relative and the only one left who immigrated to the USA. She has helped me to understand why our immigrant ancestors didn't speak much of the past: the hard times they endured, including leaving their homes and family forever were too painful to remember, and the present was such a busy time trying to make a living and adjust to life's changes that the past was kept in the past. One of the many contributions from my Aunt Lucy Gillespie sums it up: Yesterday is history, Tomorrow is a mystery, Today is a gift. Than's why we call it the present. Read and enjoy. With love, Leisa Wegner Hobson |
