Greenwood Film Society
NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS -- Spring 2002

Important Announcement!

I am pleased to let everyone know that I've found someone to continue running the club for the next school year! Loven Plaza will be Greenwood Film Society's club president for the 2002-2003 academic year, and Don Flores will be acting as vice president. So I'd like to deeply thank these two for keeping the club alive for another year! ^_^

And as for me, Tara, you haven't gotten rid of me quite yet... =P I'll still be in the area, so I will continue to serve as librarian and webmaster. And that just leaves one position open, that of secretary. So far no one has stepped forward to fulfill this role, so if any of you can volunteer your time for this position, please e-mail the club at [email protected]. The secretary's duty is to make the weekly flyers. Thanks again everyone!

Well, it's finally the last week of the quarter! Just whizzed by, hasn't it? (Maybe not fast enough for some of you though, eh? =P) I just wanted to say that I had a great time running Greenwood this year, meeting all of you regulars and not-so-regulars during each quarter, and just relaxing and having fun at the meetings. I'm 95% sure I'll still be around helping out next year (as librarian and webmaster), but in the meanwhile, don't give Loven too hard a time as president next year. ^_^ The club will still (hopefully) conduct shopping trips, find excuses for parties, and have a gaming night at least one quarter, since I think those that attended can all agree that it was a blast! I had a great time anyway. =D

And for those of you who are curious about next year's screening schedule, these are the series that the club will be tentatively showing next year: more Cardcaptor Sakura, Great Teacher Onizuka, Seikai no Senki I & II (sequels to Crest of the Stars), more Onegai Teacher and Full Metal Panic, and Fruits Basket. More, of course, will be announced as the quarters progress.

I hope everyone has a wonderful, relaxing, fun-filled summer, and I look forward to seeing many of you next year!

Well, the first half of the quarter's already whizzed by... Just wanted to let everyone know that the club will be starting a new series this week, entitled "Full Metal Panic." One of Gonzo's new series this season, its showing was actually postponed to this past January due to the events on 9/11. Set in current times, with the exceptions that the KGB still exists and the cold war is still raging, it revolves around an utterly socially inept elite military officer sent to a Japanese high school to protect a mysterious high school student, whom the KGB is after. A good mix of comedy and action! The 24 ep. series will be started this quarter and continued in the 2002-03 school year.

And next week, we will be starting not 1, not 2, but 3 new series! ^_^ The first, Brigadoon: Marin & Meran, revolves around a pre-teen girl who stumbles upon a mysterious robot called Meran Blue, who has to protect her from the forces of Brigadoon that are trying to kill her (for some unknown reason of course!) This series looks to be a charming, action-packed sci-fi series from Sunrise. The first 4 eps. will be shown this quarter only! The rest will have to wait until Tokyopop starts releasing the volumes hopefully later this year. ~_^

The second series we'll be starting is Onegai Teacher, a twelve-episode romantic comedy for guys. This series revolves around the relationship that develops between student and teacher, as the student discovers and endeavors to protect the new teacher's secret. A fanboy's dream come true! ^_^ This series will begin this quarter and finish in Fall Quarter 2002.

The last series the club will be beginning next week is the popular shoujo romantic comedy "Super GALS! Kotobuki Ran." Starring Ran and her two best buddies, we follow their high school misadventures and developing relationships (of course!). A very upbeat shoujo series, with an incredibly flamboyant main character! One of my recent faves, the club will regrettably only show the first 4 episodes this quarter. If the digisubbing of this series starts picking up, it may be possible to show more next year (I'm hoping! =) )

And last, but certainly not least, the club will show the entire Read or Die! OVA series starting May 23. Based on a popular manga of the same name, it follows a secret British Forces agent in her quest to find out why rare books are being stolen and long-dead geniuses being cloned. A non-stop action-packed series filled with intrigue! This series will be finished the last week of the quarter.

Oh yes, one last thing: I'll be adding some new library tapes on Wednesday night, so be sure to check the list that night to see what I've added in case you want to borrow any for this week. Thanks.

Okay, some updates on decisions made at the meetings:

First off, there will be no Cardcaptor Sakura marathon at the end of the quarter; the club has decided to finish up the series during the Fall 2002 quarter.

Secondly, it's been decided that the anime shopping trip will be this coming Sunday, April 21. It will be conducted similarly to the last run (see activities page for more info), but the rest of the details will be decided at this week's meeting (where and when to meet, what stores we're going to visit etc.). So for those of you that are going on the trip, be sure to show up at this week's meeting, as we will be making these announcements then. And also, if you still don't have a ride for the trip and would like to go, we will try to arrange seats for you at this week's meeting as well. See you all Thursday! ^_^

- Posted by Tara, March 31, 11:39 PM -

How did everyone's spring break go? I'm feeling wonderfully recuperated from a taxing quarter (although I still wish I had another week. =P) I'd just like everyone to know that I've updated the page for the coming quarter, which includes the weekly meeting schedule, adding new library titles, clarifying some membership rules, and adding a few more links. Our meeting time and room have again changed this quarter, so please check the schedule page for that information. And also, please e-mail me by Wednesday if you'd like to check out any library titles at this week's meeting.

And since many of the series the club is currently showing will end this quarter, we will be starting some new series that I hope you all will enjoy! Tentatively, I will be showing the Read or Die! OVA series, Brigadoon: Marin & Meran, Super GALS! Kotobuki Ran, Full Metal Panic, Onegai Teacher, and some more TBA OVAs. Many of these will be beginning during the 2nd half of the quarter, so check the updates on the schedule page for when some of these series will start.

I would also like to ask all of you if you are interested in a Cardcaptor Sakura marathon this quarter. As the series is 70 eps. long and includes a final movie, the club will not be able to show the rest of the series this quarter. So I would like to know if any of you would like to attend a Sakura marathon tentatively scheduled for the 8th week of the quarter, on Saturday, which may run as long as 7 1/2 hours. So please e-mail me or let me know at a club meeting if you're interested in this event so I can start planning for it. Thanks!

And finally, the folks at Videoburn and I would also like to know if anyone would like to go on another anime shopping trip out to LA this quarter. It would take place on either the weekend of the 3rd or 4th week of the quarter, and we will be going to the same places (and possibly more) that we went to on the last club shopping trip. So again, please e-mail me or let me know at a club meeting if you're interested in attending. Thanks again!

Whew! ^_^;;

NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS -- Winter 2002

Important Announcement!

Greenwood is looking for a new president! As I am graduating at the end of June, the club will need someone else to run it if it is to continue at UCR for the 2002-03 school year and beyond. If anyone is interested, or would like some information on the responsibilities that one must undertake to operate the club, please e-mail us at [email protected]. The minimum requirement is that the president must be a UCR student. I am more than willing to help anyone interested in the position with restarting the club for the next school year.

Addendum (2/21):
The club will also need someone to make flyers to advertise the weekly meetings, along with someone who can take charge of the web page. So if any of you would like to help keep the club running next year, we also need volunteers for these positions, and maybe a couple more people to do miscellaneous tasks for the club (like putting up the flyers every week, etc.) So I hope that some of you will step forward to help keep the club running next year. Thanks!

Whew! Finally updated everything on the web page, including the schedule for the rest of the quarter and the library list. I added 21 new titles to the library, so check the library page to see if you're interested in borrowing any of the new tapes.

I also would like to ask all of you if you'd like to help chip in so the club can order pizza for the last meeting on the 14th. Thought it'd be a nice way to wrap up the quarter. ^_^ I'm thinking that $2-3 per person should be enough to buy a few one-topping pizzas, so if possible, please bring some money to this week's meeting so I can start gathering the cash. I'll also ask at this week's meeting about pizza place (Pizza Hut, Little Caesar's, etc.) and topping preference.

And finally, since spring break is only a week long, I'm going to allow members to borrow library tapes over the holiday. If anyone's interested anyway. Would be a good time to borrow some of the 12 ep. tapes! =)

P.S. I guess I'm going to have to resort to begging... =P So far only one person's stepped forward expressing interest in keeping the club alive next year. So again I'd like to ask for people to volunteer some of their time and resources to help the club. It'd also be advantageous if any of you could also e-mail me before the end of this quarter. That way, I can show you some of the things the club has to do at the beginning of every quarter, since spring quarter begins in April. Thanks again! ^_^

Here's a fun link that a club member sent me today -- find out who your anime Valentine is!
http://www.centralparkmedia.com/aol/question.cfm
This may be a week late, but fun nevertheless! My anime Valentine is Kenshin...totemo ureshiiiiiiii wa yo! ^_^ How about the rest of you?

- Posted by Tara, February 11, 10:04 PM -

Aauugghh! I'm guilty of perpetuating spam! @_@ As some of you will notice in your inboxes, there will be a "someone has sent you a valentine" message. I received the same message in the Greenwood inbox earlier, so I was thinking that some thoughtful club-goer had sent the club a pleasant holiday greeting. I use the link, go to the site and find that I have to guess who sent me the greeting. Then I figure I'd get to see a nice Valentine e-card or some such when I finally guessed the sender. So since I like guessing games, I figured I'd try to figure out who sent the club the e-mail. I then plug in all of the people's addresses I have in the club inbox, and I find that I'm still perplexed. Lo and behold, I finally go to read the FAQ section, blush *bright* red when I finally realize what the site is for, and become a deeper shade of red when I realize I've just spammed a bunch of people in the club -- everyone I guessed received the same e-mail I initially received. (I know, I know, the site's name should give it away, but I kinda wasn't paying too much attention -- I'm kinda out of it since I'm sick. ~_^ Details shmetails anyway. ) So I deeply apologize for all of the spam, and I hope I didn't get anyone's hopes up. ~_^ (I'm kidding, I'm kidding! Don't kill me. =P)

And hopefully you'll all forgive me when I bribe -- *cough cough* -- I mean generously bring everyone soda and candy for this week's Valentine's Day meeting date! ^o^ I highly encourage other club-goers to bring treats as well; the more people that participate, the more fun it'll be! =)

- Posted by Tara, February 4, 12:17 AM -

As some of you may have already noticed, next week's meeting happens to fall on Valentine's Day! As such, I would like to show a Valentine's episode or two, but am having trouble thinking of any. So if any of you have any suggestions as to which series have good Valentine's Day episodes, please let the club know. Thanks! ^_^

- Posted by Tara, January 9, 2:50 AM -

Whew! We finally have a classroom sufficient for the club's needs for the rest of the quarter! That room is Sproul 1340, and meetings will begin at 7:15 PM weekly on Thursdays (not including this week, of course). Check the schedule page for more info. ^_^

- Posted by Tara, January 6, 3:18 AM -

Oops, forgot to mention that I'll be adding a bunch of library tapes this coming week! So if any members would like to borrow any of these new tapes at this week's meeting, please e-mail me by Wednesday evening so I can be sure to receive your library request. And if you are not yet a GFS member and would like to become one, please visit the membership info page on this site to find out more about it. Thanks!

-Posted by Tara, January 3, 10:05 PM-

Happy New Year!

Hope everyone had a relaxing winter break! Now it's back to the grind, eh? ^_^ I'd just like to let you all know that I've updated the site for this quarter. I've changed some library rules (members can now borrow three tapes per week, and the deposit per tape is now $2), added a few anime shops as well as Videoburn's website to the links page, and have updated the schedule page with info on the first two meetings for the quarter.

Unfortunately, I'm having problems acquiring a room... I have a Terrace room for the first week, but I have been assigned a classroom that's too small for the rest of the quarter (not to mention the fact that it doesn't have a screen either -_-). I've been working to correct the problem, but there are very few rooms available at decent times. So meetings may have to take place beginning at 7:30, although I'm hoping to get a room at 7 PM. And so you all know, Sproul 1102 is being utilized by a large activity group on both Tuesday and Thursday nights, so I couldn't get that room again. Ah well... I'll update this page as soon as I find out what replacement room I can arrange.

Looking forward to seeing you all again this quarter! And if any of you have any questions and suggestions for the club, please send an e-mail our way. =)

NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS -- FALL 2001

- Posted by Tara, December 5, 10:09 PM -

It's finally the last week of the quarter! I'm sure many of you are looking forward to the holiday break... I know I certainly am! ^_^ Anyway, I'd just like to announce that tomorrow's meeting will be the last of the quarter. In celebration of the coming holidays, as well as the end of the quarter, I'm bringing cookies and soda for everyone to snack on...not to mention that I'll be handing out a bunch of anime goodies the folks at Animate generously gave to the club this past Sunday!

Happy holidays, and I look forward to seeing everyone next quarter.
Tara =)

- Posted by Tara, November 27, 11:17 PM -

I've updated the activities page to include more detailed information about Sunday's shopping trip. Be sure to read the page if you are planning on coming along!

And also, this week will be the last week members may borrow tapes from the library. The next available date for check-out will be the first meeting next quarter. I will be adding some tapes to the library over winter break, so if there's anything in particular any of you members would like to see added, please let me know and I'll see what I can do. ^_^

- Posted by Tara, November 19, 10:40 PM -

Hello everyone! I would just like to again say that there will be NO MEETING THIS WEEK due to the Thanksgiving holiday. I hope to see many of you next week! ^_^

And also, if you would like to go on the shopping trip December 2 (see activities page for details) please e-mail me this week if possible, especially if you can't yourself drive down. That way, I can ask some of the drivers if they have any space for you, and then subsequently get you in contact with them (and vice versa) so you can sort out how the driver can pick you up. It may be a bit of short notice for the drivers by the time the next meeting rolls around. ~_^ Thanks!

- Posted by Tara, November 14, 12:00 AM -

I just added a bunch of new library tapes that I've been working on for the past couple of weeks! So if you'd like to see what's now available in the library, please visit the library page. And for those members that would like to borrow any of the new tapes, I will be checking my e-mail on Thursday at 11 AM. So if you send in your library request by then, I'll have the tapes for you at this week's meeting. ^_^

- Posted by Tara, November 11, 3:25 AM -

Whew! I've been doing quite a bit of updating to the web page tonight. As you can see, I've added three new sections: one for club activities, the next describing online discounts for Greenwood members, and a news archive containing past announcements. If you have any questions or suggestions concerning these new pages, please let us know!

But the big club announcement for tonight is about the:

Greenwood and Videoburn Anime Shopping Trip!
This has been discussed for the past two weeks during club meetings, and planning has been going quite smoothly. For more detailed information about this trip, go to the new club activities page on this website. For those of you who did not already know about this trip and are interested in coming along, let us know via e-mail or in person at the next possible club meeting!

Some of you may also be interested in the daily contest for the month of November over at animeondvd.com. They are giving away a random ADV DVD every day this month! And what makes the news even sweeter is that entering each day is simple -- if you're interested, do visit their webpage for more details. ^_^

- Posted by Tara, October 30, 9:22 PM -

I'm sure everyone's noticed, but I won't be showing any more GTO for the interim. I am supposed to eventually receive master copies of up to episode 11 from a fansubber I sponsored the episodes from, but I have yet to receive them. I will show more episodes as soon as I receive them, however. I'll post when I will resume showing the series as soon as I receive the tapes.

On another note, there will be a couple of anime screenings in the Hollywood area this and next weekend. Here's the info:

Anime at AFI Fest on Nov. 3rd and 10th:
"Two Japanese animated feature films (dubbed in English) will premiere at AFI Fest 2001 at the Pacific Theatre in Hollywood (6433 Hollywood Blvd.). AH! MY GODDESS will screen Saturday, November 3rd at 4 PM and ESCAFLOWNE THE MOVIE: A GIRL IN GAIA will screen Saturday, November 10th at 4 PM, followed by a Q & A with one of the producers of the movie, Ken Iyadomi. Advance tickets and more information available by calling 866 AFI-FEST or through www.afifest.com. Sponsored in part by ANIMERICA magazine.

This year's AFI Fest runs November 1-11 and features a combined total of 114 features, shorts and documentaries, including a special tribute to director Ang Lee (CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON; THE ICE STORM; SENSE AND SENSIBILITY, et al). The annual AFI Fest is the largest attended film festival in So. Calif. and is presented by the American Film Institute (www.afionline.org)."

- Posted by Tara, October 23, 8:43 PM -

Over the next couple of days, I will be adding a few tapes to the club library for members to borrow. If you would like to borrow any of them at this week's meeting, please send your library request e-mail so that I receive it by Thursday at 11 AM. That will be the last time I will check the club e-mail before coming to the meeting. So if you're interested, check the library list for the new tapes I've added! ^_^

- Posted by Tara, October 7, 6:37 PM -

Whew! I finally updated the membership info page and added the club library page! So for those of you interested in becoming Greenwood members, please read over the rates and policies in the membership section. If you decide to become a member, please feel free to print out the membership form, fill it out, and turn it in along with the membership fee at the upcoming meeting. Do let me know via e-mail if you'd also like to check out some tapes at the next meeting. ^_^

Also, the schedule page has been updated to list this week's schedule in the order in which the episodes will be shown. Please e-mail the club if you have any additional questions, suggestions, or comments! Thanks. =)

- Posted by Tara, September 30, 8:55 PM -

Now that school's back in session, our first club meeting will be this Thursday, October 4, from 6 to 10 PM in Terrace Room B. Check the schedule page for info about what series we'll be showing, as well as for directions to our meeting room. Look forward to seeing everybody there! ^_^

I have also managed to update most of the site, with the exception of the membership info page and the articles section. I hope to get to the membership info page this coming weekend, but I don't know if I will ever be able to add any feature articles to the page. Too much to do...but if anyone is willing to become the webmaster in my stead and take on that responsibility, please e-mail me to let me know! I'd really appreciate the help. =)

- Posted by Tara, August 19, 3:27AM -

Greenwood's back up and running! After recently talking to the founding president, Rob, and finding out that the club had gone under, I decided I couldn't just let the club die. So... along with the generous help of a couple of my friends and both Rob and Francis, the club is now officially re-registered for the coming academic year. =) I hope to slowly get this page back up to speed over the next month so it will be fully updated by the time instruction begins. It'll be a slow process, but I'm sure I can manage. So for those of you that are interested, please check back for updates, and do e-mail me with any questions, suggestions, etc. that you may have.

Many thanks to everyone who has helped me restart the club, and I'm looking forward to seeing many new and familiar faces at the first meeting!

-- Tara Pastucha, your new Greenwood Film Society President
