Stratosphere Samba

for amplified cello and piano

Duration: ca. 3'00"

This brief little piece begins in an aleatoric, atmospheric (stratospheric) fashion which gradually gives way to some nice rhythmic pounding on both the cello and piano. After some significant building through ever greater layers of polytonality, the "samba" actually begins.
The piece is not actually based on any particular melody, but rather on a rhythmic figure in 7/4 which is closely related to the "clave" in seven. Still, it is sorely obvious that it was written by a dirty white boy rather than a true master of the craft.
