Capability Analysis: Remember

  1. Capability analysis is a set of statistical calculations used to assess the performance of a system in relation to its specification limits.

  2. Capability analysis has predictive value only if the system being analyzed is statistically stable.

  3. Specifications are not the same as control limits. Specifications are set by the customer, engineering, or management, and control limits are based on the data collected to make a control chart.

  4. The analysis reveals the percent of output which may lie outside the specification limits and "how" capable the system is. It draws a picture of the distribution of output relative to the specifications.

  5. Capability analysis is based on the idea that reducing the variation around the target value is the goal of quality improvement.
