Welcome to Silverscreen
Can Pixar continue its run of succes with Cars?
It would be hard to argue with Pixar that Cars isn't going to be a huge critical
and commercial success. Given that over the past 10 years, they have produced 7 of the
best family movies, all gaining critical acclaim putting their parent company in the
shade at the same time. Coupled with the fact that Pixar's worst film, A Bugs Life is
nothing less than excellent gives them a good argument.
So far however, the general view of critics has been that of mild dissapointment with
both released trailers failing to show any of the imaginitive flair that make Pixar's
films such a joy to watch. Judgement of course must be left until the film is reviewed
and until then there are certain things that must be taken into account before giving
judgement. The first is that from the 2 trailers we have seen very little dialogue,
the trailers instead looking to concentrate on the films Nascar racing action scenes.
What the trailers do is in a Pixar tradition, give very little away about the story
or plot of the film. Instead we are introduced to a selection of the charactrs and
locales that will be present in the final film. Secondly it is important to
remember about the voice talent in the film, the biggest draw being one of Hollywood's
most comedically talented actors, Owen Wilson. He has proven time and time again to
provide laughs to an audience in succesful comedies such as Starsky and Hutch and
Wedding Crashers. He was able to make his mark in smaller, supporting roles such as
Meet The Parents giving a lot of confidence that Cars will be a very funny film
While there has been in those areas of the film, nobody can argue with the visuals
that show the sort of vibrancy and confidence that Pixar have always been able to
garner from its teams. While not intended to be completly realistic, it is the small
details such as the rust on the cars that sets this above Pixar's own and the
competitions work. One thing that interests from a design point of view is how the
cars will interact with each other, due to the apparent lack of humans in the film, a
good example being the workers changing the Nascar racers tyres.
With only a couple of months till release, it won't be long till we can if Lasseter
and co have done it again.
