Mark
Chapter
15
15:1``And
immediately at daybreak,
the
chief priests with the elders and the scribes/'experts in the law'
and
the entire 'Sanhedrin Counsel',
having
bound Jesus,
they
carried Him away,
and
handed Him over to Pilate.
15:2``Pilate
asked Him {Jesus},
"As
for You . . . are You the king of the Jews?"
And,
He 'had an answer for'/'gave a discerning answer
from
the ultimate source of Himself to' {apokrinomai} him, He says,
"You
said it." {idiom: literally, "As for you . . . you are
saying it."}
15:3``And
the chief priests kept on accusing Him {Jesus}
of
many things.
15:4``And,
Pilate kept on asking Him {Jesus} saying,
"Are
You absolutely not {ouk} answering even one thing?
Behold,
how many things of which they are accusing you!"
15:5``But
Jesus still answered not even one thing,
so
that Pilate was amazed.
15:6``Now,
at the feast,
it
was his custom to release to them one prisoner
whom
they would be desiring.
15:7``Now,
there was the one commonly known as Barabbas
who
was in chains with those who had participated in an insurrection,
those
being of that class that had committed murder
in
the insurrection referred to.
15:8``And,
having gone up,
the
crowd began to be asking him {Pilate}
to
do just as he had always been accustomed to do for them.
15:9-10``And
Pilate 'had an answer for'/'gave a discerning answer
from
the ultimate source of himself to' {apokrinomai} them saying,
"Are
you desiring that I release to you
the
King of the Jews ?" 15:10``
(for
'it was gradually dawning upon him' {ginosko}
that
because of envy the high/chief priests
had
delivered/handed/betrayed {paradidomi} Him over.)
15:11``And,
the high/chief priests stirred up the crowd
that
he should rather release Barabbas to them.
15:12``But
Pilate again 'had an answer'/'gave a discerning answer
from
the ultimate source of himself' {apokrinomai}
them
saying to them, "What then shall I do to Him
whom
you are calling the King of the Jews?"
15:13``But
they again cried, "Crucify Him, at one!"
15:14``But
Pilate was saying to them,
"Why,
what evil has He done?"
But
they shouted more insistently, "Crucify him, at once!"
15:15``Then,
Pilate, desiring after reflection,
to
satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas.
And,
having scourged/flogged Jesus,
delivered
{paradidomi} Him to be crucified.
15:16``And,
the soldiers led Him {Jesus}
into
the courtyard, which is the Praetorium/"governor's residence",
and
they called together the whole company.
15:17``And,
they clothed Him {Jesus} with purple
and
having woven together
a
crown {stephanos} of thorns {akanthinos},
they
placed it about His {head}.
15:18``And,
they began to be saluting Him {Jesus},
"Hail,
King of the Jews!"
15:19``And,
they kept on beating His head
with
a staff made of a reed,
and
they kept on spitting on Him {Jesus}
and
bowing their knees,
they
were worshipping Him {mocking Him}.
15:20``And,
when they had mocked him,
they
took off from Him the purple {cloak}
and
put His own clothes on Him.
And,
they led Him out in order that they might crucify Him.
15:21~~The
soldiers drafted/'pressed into service'
a
passer-by to carry His cross,
a
man coming from the country, Simon of Cyrene,
the
father of Alexander and Rufus.
{Note:
Paul greets Rufus also in Romans 16:13.}
15:22``And,
they bring Him {Jesus}
to
the place called Golgotha
(which
translated/interpreted - Place of the Skull).
15:23``And,
they offered Him {Jesus}
wine
mixed with myrrh, but he did not take/receive it.
15:24``And,
they crucified Him
and
divide/distribute His clothes among themselves,
casting
lots for them . . . {to decide} who would take what.
15:25``Now,
it was the third hour {Jewish time}/
'nine
o'clock in the morning {Gentile time}'
and
they crucified Him.
15:26``And,
there was
the
inscription of His accusation written down,
"The
King of the Jews."
15:27``And,
with Him they crucified two brigands/robbers . . .
one
on His right and one on His left.
15:28``
{Verse 28 is not in the best manuscripts:
'And
the scripture was fulfilled,
which
said, 'And He was numbered with the transgressors.' }
15:29-30``And,
those passing by kept on reviling Him,
shaking
their heads and saying,
"Aha!
The One Who is destroying the temple
and
building it in three days, 15:30``
save
Yourself, coming down from the cross!"
15:31``In
the same way,
the
chief priests, mocking, were repeating to one another
with
the scribes/'experts in the law'
"Others
He saved . . .
but
He absolutely is not {ouk} able/
'does
not have the power' {dunamai}
to
save Himself!
15:32``The
Anointed One/Christ/Messiah . . . the King of Israel . . .
let
Him come down from the cross now,
in
order that we may see with discernment and believe!"
And,
those who were crucified with Him were reviling Him.
15:33-34``And,
the sixth hour {Jewish time}/noon {Gentile time}
having
come, a darkness came over the entire land
until
the 'ninth hour'/'three o'clock that afternoon'. 15:34``
Jesus
shouted out with a loud voice,
"Eloi,
Eloi, lema sabachthani?" . . .which interpreted means,
"My
God, My God, why have You forsaken {egkataleipo} Me?"
15:35``And,
certain ones of those standing by,
having
heard, were saying,
"Behold
. . . He is calling for Elijah!"
15:36``But
having run, a certain one,
having
filled a sponge with sour wine,
having
put it on a stick/reed, was giving Him a drink, saying,
"Hold
off. Let us see whether Elijah takes Him down!"
15:37``And,
Jesus, having exhaled {aphiemi}
with
a loud voice . . . expired/'breathed out his life/breath' {ekpneo}'.
15:38``And
the temple curtain/veil {katapetasma}
was
torn in two from top to bottom.
{Note;
This is a 'back at the ranch verse'. When Jesus died, the curtain
that separated the Holy of Holies from the rest of the holy area, was
ripped in two - from the top down. This curtain was huge and thick.
Only God could tear it. Jesus had fulfilled all the Levitical
sacrifices and had abrogated them. The Holy of Holies was no more.
Ritual was over - Reality had come!}
15:39``And,
the centurion, who stood 'in front of'/by opposite' Him,
having
seen that thus He breathed out His life, said,
"Truly,
this Man was the/a Son of God!"
15:40-41``Now,
there were also women,
looking
on carefully and with interest,
viewing
attentively from a distance.
Among
whom also was Mary Magdalene,
and
Mary the mother of 'James the younger'
and
of Joses and Salome, 15:41``
who,
when He was in Galilee,
were
accustomed to follow Him and minister to Him,
and
many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.
15:42-43``And,
already evening had come.
Since
it was the time of making rounds,
which
is the day before the Sabbath, 15:43``
Joseph,
the one from Arimathea,
having
come, 'an honorable councilor'/
'a
highly regarded member of the Sanhedrin council'
who
also himself was waiting for the kingdom of God,
taking
courage, went in to Pilate
and
asked for the body of Jesus for himself.
15:44-45``
But Pilate wondered whether He was already dead.
And,
having called the centurion,
he
asked him if he had just died.15:45``
And,
having come to know it from the centurion,
he
freely gave the corpse to Joseph.
15:46``And,
having purchased in the marketplace fine linen,
having
taken Him {Jesus} down,
he
wrapped Him with the fine linen
and
placed Him in a tomb which had been cut out of the rock
and
rolled a stone against the door of the tomb.
15:47``And,
Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses,
were
attentively observing where He was laid.
