Mark

Chapter 14 (Continued)

14:51-52``And a certain young man was following with Him {Jesus}
who had thrown a linen cloth around his nakedness.

And, they seized him. 14:52``
And, having left the linen cloth, he ran off naked.

14:53``And, they led Jesus to the high priest,
and there are gathered together all the chief priests
and elders and scribes/'experts in the law'.

14:54``And Peter, from a distance, followed Him {Jesus}
even into the courtyard of the high/chief priest.

And, he {Peter} was sitting with the guards/officers
and warming himself by the fire.

14:55``Now the chief priests
and the entire 'Sanhedrin counsel' {sunedrion}
were constantly seeking testimony against Jesus
with a view to putting Him to death,
and they were absolutely not {ouk} finding anything.

14:56``For many were repeatedly bearing false witness/testimony
against Him . . . but their testimony absolutely did not {ouk} agree.

{Note: An important part of Jewish justice was to have two witnesses testify against the man being charged. They lied, but did not get their stories to match.}

14:57-58``And, certain, having risen,
were bearing false testimony against Him, saying, 14:58``
"As for us, we heard Him {Jesus} saying,
'as for Myself, I will destroy this temple which is made with hands
and throughout a period of three days
another one of the same kind . . . made without hands, I will build.'"

14:59``Yet absolutely not {ouk} even
in the way described did their testimony did agree.

14:60``And, having risen,
the high priest in the midst was interrogating {eperotao}
Jesus saying, "Do you have no answer {apokrinomai}?

What is this they are testifying against you?"

14:61``But He {Jesus} kept on maintaining His silence,
and did not answer.

Again the high priest interrogated Him and said,
"Are you the Christ/'Anointed One'/Messiah . . .
the Son of the Blessed One?"

14:62``Then Jesus said, "I am.

And you will see the 'Son of Man'
sitting on the right hand of Power
and coming with the clouds of heaven."

14:63-64``Then the high priest, having torn apart his tunic, says,
"Why do we still have need of witnesses? 14:64``
You have heard His blasphemy! What 'do you think'/'is your view'?"

And, they all condemned Him to be guilty of death.

14:65``And certain ones began to be spitting on Him,
and to be 'covering His face'/'blindfolding Him'
and 'pummeling Him'/'striking Him with their fists', saying, "Prophesy!"

Even the guards/officers took Him
and 'caught Him by blows with the flat of the hand'/'slapped Him'.

14:66-67``And, when Peter was down in the courtyard,
there comes one of the high priest's slave-girls 14:67``
and having seen Peter warming himself,
having gazed intently at him she says,
"And, as for you,
you also were with that one of Nazareth, that Jesus."

14:68``But he {Peter} denied it, saying,
"Neither do I know nor do I understand, as for you,
what you are talking about."

And, he went out into the forecourt.

14:69``And, the slave girl, having seen him,
she began again to be saying to the bystanders,
"This man is one of them."

14:70``But again, he kept on denying it.

And a short time later, the bystanders again kept on saying to Peter,
"Truly you are one of them, for you are also a Galilean."

14:71``But he {Peter} began
to 'be putting himself under a curse'/curse
and to 'be putting himself under oath'/swear,
"I absolutely do not {ouk} know this man
concerning whom you are speaking!"

14:72``And, immediately, a second time a cock sounded forth.

And, Peter remembered The Word/Doctrine as Jesus spoke it to him
"Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times."

And having put his thought upon it,
he {Peter} began to weep intensely.
