The Urban Divers members along with community volunteers cruise the canal weekly. Traps laid at strategic points along the canal are checked and marine life documented, water quality sampling data is also collected. This report is created by Ludger K. Balan, Environmental Program Director, Amy Brooks- Coordinator, and Mitsue Balan, Program Coordinator.

Gowanus Canal Health Check Latest Update- July 15th, 2003

Location: (9th Street Bridge- most southern end of Canal -10:29 AM- High Tide) DO= 1.96 ppm (YSI 85), pH= 7.5, Secchi =7ft, Temp= 21.6C (YSI 85), Salinity = 22.8ppt (YSI 85) Phosphate= N/A, Nitrate =N/A,

Location: ( Union Street Bridge- most northern end of Canal -12:14 PM- outgoing Tide) DO= 2.3ppm (YSI 85), pH= 7.5, Secchi =4.3 ft, Temp= 21.4C (YSI 85), Salinity = 23.6ppt (YSI 85) Phosphate= 0.4 ppm, Nitrate =0.4 ppm,
Minnows and Killies often collected in abundance were quite scarce thus far. Silversides a common bait fish usually found in schools of thousands last year around this time have not been spotted thus far. This maybe the result of the lowest oxygen levels the canal is currently experiencing. Usually averaging at about 3.5 the DO level in recent test was consirably lower. In general 4-5 ppm is a fair count necessary to sustain aquatic wildlife.
Mitsue takes a concerned look at a new specie ( american eel)collected in our traps. Each new specie is documented and released. (collected on July 19)

Albert S, displays the collection of the day, also collected that day was a resilient adult Pipefish. Pipefish are very similar to Seahorses.

Albert S. measures the turbity with a secchy disk( Turbidity = amount of floating particles suspended in the water. These floating particles can be planktons, sediment or other pollutants. These floating particles often gives the water its color. They can also effect the amount of sunlight which pierces through the water. Limiting the process of photosynthesis.
Fish collected in our traps are carefully handled, examined, documented and immediately release. We follow a standard protocol established by The River Project. The River Project has been monitoring fish in the Hudson River on the west side on Manhattan for over a decade. It is our goal to establish a regional data base of all the aquatic wildlife found in NYC's urban waterways.
