The Urban Divers Gowanus Monitor Project- Join us and volunteer on frequent monitoring trips along Gowanus Canal and other places aboard our conservation motorboats and fleets of row boats. Work along trained staff and project scientist. A grea t opportunity to to explore and rediscover the natural resources of our waterfront.

The Urban Divers staff stewards team up with biology students from AREAC, Brooklyn College, to monitor fecal coliform bacteria in the Gowanus Canal. UDEC member and youth educator Cezar, Barbara (student biologist) and Dr.Martin Shreibman. May 05.
The entire 9th grade class of NY Harbor School, a specialized maritime HS locate in Bushwick, Brooklyn, participate in The Urban Divers annual Estuary Ecology Field Trip and Workshop. Students investigate pollution and examiine human impact on the natural resources, monitor for water quality, and marine wildlife. The Urban Divers experienced staff environmental educators offer a fresh perpective on the history, and ecology of the historic canal under restoration. The program is incorparated as part of the class curriculum. April 19th thru May 2nd.
The Urban Divers scientific divers and underwater photographers, Ludger and Robert dive into the abiss of the Gowanus Canal to collect samples and document mysterious bio-film ( captured above) found on the bottom of the canal. Member Scientists, Prof. Nasreen Haque, Phd, Columbia Univ, SUNY and Prof. Niloufar Haque, Phd, City College, CUNY, investigates data collected. A school of stripped bass is documented beneath the canal by our underwater photographer Ludger, in the Nov 2004. Diving the Gowanus Canal presents many challenges due to the high level of contaminents that exazerbates the benthos. Special equipment and protocols were required. Several more survey dives are in planning.
Senetor Velmanette Montgomery ( second row, 2nd right, pic #1), Judd Schechtman, Environmental Specialist and Land Use Coordinator, from the Brooklyn Borough President's office joins The Urban Divers staff, core members and local residents on and educational eco-cruise of the Gowanus Canal aboard its volunteer conservation vessel " CleanWater NY" .
