Thanks for checking us out!
Clothing and other itemsThank you all very much for the donations we gathered quickly in the week before Spring Break! We ended up with 230 lb of donated clothing and dollar store items to take with us March 12 when we visited our daughter in the missions on Highway A3 north of Kingston, Jamaica. Erin Carney is a graduate of St. Joseph's High School and member of St. Mary’s Parish here in Barrie. She is currently working as a volunteer with the Passionists Volunteers International organization. She heard about it through Fr. Bernard, who completed his stay at St. Mary's in the fall. Erin went to Stony Hill, Jamaica, with three other volunteers and Fr. Lucian, the director of the Jamaica project, in August 2004. Her calls and emails back to the family have detailed the extreme poverty of the people living in the small communities in the area. Pictures! We took lots of pictures on our trip, and are assembling them on pages with detailed captions. We told Erin we wanted to just go around with her on her job, meet the people she is working with and help out in any way we could. We also wanted to distribute some of the donated clothing and new items we had brought from Canada. On the same page we are sharing some of the pictures that Erin has sent back. They demonstrate the conditions and the people living in the mission communities. ArticleBruce is one of the other volunteers at Stony Hill with Erin. His Alma Mater published an article about his work with PVI in their alumni newsletter. I have saved the relevant pages in PDF format. If you don't have Adobe/Acrobat Reader to open it, you can download the free software at this page When you click on this link you will download the PDF version of the newsletter article. Just scroll down to see the consecutive pages. The first two pages are continuous; the remaining portions are buried on pages 7 and 19 - you will have to look for the remaining sections on those pages. The article profiles Bruce primarily, and describes some of the volunteer roles and tasks. Film to See:"Life and Debt" by New Yorker Films was seen by the volunteers during their orientation.
