Gabrielle's Grab Bag
Did you make any New Year's resolutions? Are you keeping them? I'm trying hard to keep mine!
On New Year's Eve I finally got my trip to the Franklin Institute. Gabrielle and I got to build with giant Tinkertoys! My mom and I saw Franklin's Printing Press. We saw a 3-D movie about be-coming an astronaut. We also saw a show in the planetarium about our universe. In the movie they show pictures taken from the Hubble Telescope. One of the pictures shows

I was busy this month building my Pinewood Derby car for Cub Scouts. The big race day was January 25, 2003. We raced in groups of four and each car got to take a turn in each lane. At the end of the 4 races, each car gets points for the places they came in. Then the two cars with the most points go to the next round. I raced through 4 sets of heats (16 races all together) and was in the semifinals! I lost to the two cars that ended up winning first and second place in the pack. It was really fun and I was there for five hours! My car also was chosen as one of the most original. It gets voted on next month at our Cub Scout Blue and Gold dinner.
This month I have added two new things to my web site. One is a section about fun things that you can do in the next month. It is called "Future Fun Stuff." I also have a place now where you can check out other websites that I have found that I think are fun or have interesting things for kids. It is called "Cool Links." If you have any interesting sites, you can send them to me by e-mail ([email protected]) or put it in the guestbook and I will check them out. Then next month I will choose a few to add to the newsletter.
We also have a new guestbook. The old guestbook was cutting off people's comments and I couldn't fix it. I am trying the new one where you can write as much as you want. The only bad thing is that this guestbook will have some pop-up ads. Sorry about this, just ignore them. I just think that this guestbook will be better overall.
I hope you had a good month and remember to check every page .

Race Day
It Came From Beneath the Bed
& Invasion of the Mind Swappers from Asteroid 6 by James Howe
Talking, cheering, electric drills.
Cub scouts waiting to race their cars.
My car - number 25 - races down the track...
            I win again!

Cars  -
red, yellow, brown,

green, blue,
                         triangle, rectangle,
                               short, long, tall,                                              and skinny.

It feels great to win and race.
At the end of the day, I'm in sixth place!
Are you a fan of the Bunnicula books? You should read the new series by James Howe, Tales From the House of Bunnicula! The first book is It Came From Beneath the Bed and the second book is Invasions of the Mind Swappers from Asteroid 6. Instead of the dog Harold writing the stories, it is the little dog Howie. Howie is trying to write scary stories like his Uncle Harold. This series has Howie's writing journal where Howie tells you what's happening in his life while he write the story! Howie finds out that it's hard to please your friends when you're writing.
These books are short, but funny. They are also exciting and I think you'll like them too!

Future Fun Stuff
Starting this month I will put in links to a couple of cool websites that I have tried. If you have any favorite sites that you want to let people know about, you can send them to me. I'll check them and put two or three links in each month.
February 14 - 17: The Great Back-yard Bird Count
I did this last year and it was lots of fun and pretty easy. Do you like to watch birds? Do you have birds that visit your birdfeeders or just hang out in your yard? You can help scientist do research on which birds are in your area during the winter. You will probably need a bird book from the library to help you identify some of the birds. Last year, I started practicing the week before the count so that I could learn some of the birds. Don't worry though, you don't have to count every bird if you don't know what they are. The website has lots of information about how to do the count and how to send in your information. Check it out and try to do it, even if you only do it for one day. Right now the website has the information from last year's count. A few days before the count starts, they get everything set up for this year. You can still check out the bird checklists for your state and read about how to do the count so you could practice. I'm definitely doing the count again this year.  Maybe we could compare the birds that I count with any of you who do the count, too!

1. Enchantedlearning.com -
http://www.enchantedlearning.com

This is a cool website for kids and for parents and teachers. It has all kinds of information about animals, astronomy, and other things that you can use for research projects. You can make your own calendar and print it out. There are coloring pages for little and big kids. You can even learn words in a foreign language. For teachers there are quizzes and worksheets that can be printed out for science and social studies activities. I especially love the section that lists all the different animals.

2. Book Adventure -
http://www.bookadventure.org

This site has a reading contest. You can sign up with your class teacher or with your parents. There is a list of about 600 books of all different levels. After you read a book on the list, you take a quiz about it. You earn points toward free prizes. I have already won a 6 month subscription to Highlights magazine and a play(acting) book.
Gabrielle's Grab Bag
Gabrielle still likes playing with all her Christmas gifts. She really loves the trains that Santa Claus brought her. She is also learning to play some games like CandyLand and Go Fish. She also keeps telling everyone how big she is and one of her favorite things to say is, "I do it myself!!" Right now her favorite color is red (it used to be brown) and her favorite cereal is shredded wheat and granola. She wants to start swimming lessons, but she will have to wait just a little bit more until she is three. Right now when she comes to my lessons, she lays down on the bleacher, kicks her feet and moves her arms to pretend she is swimming!
