  Happy New Year everyone!
I hope your year is off to a relaxing start. I have recouperated from the laziness of the holidays and I'm back in the full swing of things. I've gone cabin camping in Maryland with my Boy Scout Troop. I learned to to use a G.P.S. (Global Positioning System), and got to hike around our beautiful camp. It was very cold that weekend, but the cabins stayed nice and warm with the wood stoves.
My dad has been helping me with my grammar and English for school. I have been reading
Treasure Island and researching pirates to go along with my reading. I am working on a report about the weapons that the pirates used. In history I am learning about Mohammed, the beginnings of Islam, and the rise of the Islamic Empire.
Make sure to check out the rest of this month's website.

Future Fun Stuff
Feb. 2, 2007:  Groundhog Day

Well, will it be six more weeks of winter or will spring be arriving early this year! (Frankly, we could use a little more winter around here - but I don't think the people in Colorado would agree!) Groundhog day started from an old German superstition that if a hibernating animal saw its shadow on Candlemas Day (Feb. 2nd), there would be six more weeks of winter.
Feb. 4, 2007:  Superbowl Sunday

This is the 41st Superbowl Game!

**Go Bears!**
Feb. 3 - Sept. 30, 2007:  King Tutankhamun

The King Tut exhibit arrives at Philadelphia's Franklin Institute.
Click here for exhibit and ticket information. After Philadelphia, the Egyptian Pharoah is off to London!
Feb. 8, 2007:  Boy Scout Day

The Boy Scouts of America were incorporated on February 8, 1910. Happy 97th Birthday!
Feb. 13, 2007:  Read to Your Child Day

This is for all the adults out there. Even if your kid has been reading for a long time, snuggle up and enjoy a good book together!
Feb. 14, 2007:  St. Valentine's Day

Make sure to tell those closest to you that you love them. Do something extra special to show you care.
Feb. 16 - 19, 2007:  Great Backyard Bird Count

This is a free, fun, and fairly easy project that takes only a minimum of 15 minutes a day. You don't need to have previous bird watching experience. When I started 7 years ago, I had never done any bird watching! All you need is a window to see some birds and a computer to log in your bird count observations! For more information and to register, check out the website:
Great Backyard Bird Count.
Feb. 20, 2007:  Mardi Gras

Also known as Fat Tuesday or Shrove Tuesday. Fill up on sweets and goodies before Lent begins!
Feb. 27, 2007:  Polar Bear Day

Learn about these amazing animals! Try to get to a zoo sometime this week to see these animals up close.

I have been working on my reading. I love books. I want to be able to read chapter books all by myself! I can read some picture books by myself.
I used my sewing machine to make a cover for Patch's dog bed. I also made a blanket for my stuffed animals. It's fun to make things with the sewing machine. I still need a little help holding the material steady when I sew.
I started a new level of books in piano! I like to practice my songs. I learned to play "The Brady Bunch" song. I also learned a beginner version of Beethoven's "Ode to Joy."
