Last month I went to an orchestra camp where I played the flute. I went for five days for 3 hours each day. We started each day with the whole orchestra warming up and practicing together. Every day in the middle of practice we had some gym time and then a snack. Before we went back to practicing there was always a special guest who talked about how music had affected his or her life. Then we had sectional rehearsals. The woodwind and percussion sections practiced together. At the end of camp we had a nighttime concert. I was one of the narrators and got to introduce the Brass section's musical selection. I played the flute in three different pieces. The woodwind and percussion sections played "Christ We Do All Adore Thee" by DuBois, and the whole orchestra played together on "The Navy Hymn" by Dykes and Brahm's "Symphony No. 1." All together we sounded great! I had a wonderful time and I definitely want to go back next year!
In September I started going to an art class. It is being taught by a former art teacher who is also an artist and book illustrator. We have been learning about different kinds of lines and shapes found in art. We are learning to start our sketches and drawings with basic shapes and then add details. An important thing everyone has to remember is to sketch lightly, and so far all the students are doing well. I will keep taking class until winter when the teacher will give us a break until spring.
I went camping again in September with my Scout Troop. We just went for the weekend to a nearby scout camp. On Saturday night we made a huge bonfire and had a ceremony for everyone's advancements and awards. I have moved up in rank to Tenderfoot and also earned two merit badges.
At the end of September, I turned 11 years old! A few of my friends and I went miniature golfing and had a great time. The weather was perfect that day. My friend, Alex, gave me a hermit crab! Now I am learning all about taking care of hermit crabs.
Finally, my mom took Gabrielle and I to see the movie, "March of the Penguins." It is an amazing documentary about the Emperor Penguins of the Antarctic. It follows the penguins on their long journey from the Antarctic Ocean to their breeding ground on the middle of the continent, where they stay through the harsh winter. If you have the opportunity, you should definitely go to see it!
     Happy Fall Everyone!

Gabrielle's Grab Bag
Gabrielle is disappointed that summer has to end. She really enjoys playing outside and going swimming. So far, Gabrielle loves school and she is trying very hard to learn to read. Even though she has to try hard in reading, she is a whiz in math! She can count over 100, add and subtract, make patterns, and tell time.
Gabrielle is taking acrobatic and ballet lessons this year. She is now with some of the older girls who are 6 and 7 years old. Gabrielle is also taking music lessons and learning to play the piano and violin. She loves to practice the piano every day.
Gabrielle is looking forward to Halloween and is hoping to dress up like a unicorn.
