Book Review
Shiloh
by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor
This book tells the story of Marty, an 11 year old boy who has always been honest and trustworthy. He also respects animals, so when he sees a dog being abused by its owner, he is horrified! When he finds this same dog after it has run away from its owner, he secretly builds a pen on the hill above his house. He keeps the dog, which he's named Shiloh, while beginning to lie to his family and friends to keep Shiloh safe.
As Marty's lies grow, he has to find the line between what's right and what's wrong. He believes he is doing the right thing until Shiloh is attacked in the pen by a fierce dog. Shiloh couldn't escape and is left terribly wounded! Now Marty has to face up to his lies and the guilt he feels for what happened to Shiloh.
Once everyone finds out that Marty has Shiloh, he has to choose between giving the dog back to its abusive owner or making a deal with the owner. Can Marty trust the owner to keep a deal? What other choice does Marty have?
I think you'll really enjoy reading about Marty and how he tries to save Shiloh.

Scouts
Peering outside
     face pressed against the window,
Not a single flake
     fluttering down,
Silently hoping for snow,
     six inches or more.

The gray sky
     burdened with snow,
Desperate to release it
     the snow hangs on.

Inside I stay,
     hugged by warmth,
Waiting and waiting and waiting...
Sleeping out

Covered by a tent

Out in the wilderness

Under the stars

Telling stories of camp
