| Baseball continued through April and May and I have been improving. In the games I've played second base, shortstop, and first base one time. I had practice every day and games on the weekends. Many of the games were rained out, but we tried to make them up. We didn't win many games, but I had alot of fun. Gabrielle and I both like a children's group called "Trout Fishing in America." One day our parents decided to surprise us and bring us to one of their concerts. We had fun! We even ended up leading a huge conga line at the end of the concert. Afterwards, we met the men who are in the group and they autographed our t-shirts! We had an amazing time. My mom also took us on a field trip to Bowman's Hill Wildlife Preserve. There was a self-guided tour for children and I got to guide us all! Everything there is native to Pennsylvania. We saw flowers, birds, tadpoles, frogs, turtles and even cactus! We had a picnic lunch surrounded by Bluebells. I had a great time. I had a chance in April to go to a writing workshop called "Passages" where you write poems and sometimes short stories. It was for three weekends. Every week there was a different theme. Sometimes we worked outside and wrote poems about nature. The poems in this month's Poetry Corner are from my work at Passages. I hope you enjoy them. I've been really busy with Boy Scouts the last two months. First we went on a camping trip to Gettysburg (and you can read about it in my Social Studies article), and then at the end of May I went on a mountain biking trip. We went to Jim Thorpe in the Poconos. We slept out in tents on wooden platforms. On the morning of the ride, I got fitted for a bike and helmet with the other scouts. Then a bus drove us and our gear up to the top of the trail. We biked for about 25 miles and the trip lasted three hours, including our stop for lunch. I had a wonderful, but tiring, experience. At the end of May, my dad took Gabrielle and I to the beach in Delaware for the weekend. It was cool and breezy on the beach and the water in the ocean was freezing! That didn't stop us from having a good time. My friend, Spencer, and I dug a huge hole on the beach. When I stood in the hole, I was in chest deep! We dug so deep that water was pooling in the bottom. It rained a little and we had a chance to relax by playing games and watching some movies. I'm just about finished with all my requirements for 5th grade. I took my 5th grade test and just have to complete the interview with my evaluator. We're getting ready to go to my uncle's wedding in Rockford, Illinois. I am looking forward to the trip and the rest of the summer! |

| June 7- Hunger Awareness Day-Find out if there is a food bank or food drive in your area and donate some food to the hungry! You can give up lunch and donate the money (This is especially good for a working adult who buys lunch at a restaurant.) You can try to spend only $0.89 per person/per meal (the allotment given for food stamps), and give your savings to a local food charity. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| June 14-Flag Day Don't forget to fly the American flag today. It is a day to show respect for the flag. The flag should be flown from sunrise to sunset. It can only be flown at night if you have a special light shining on it. |

| Gabrielle's Grab Bag | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| For this edition of the Grab Bag, I interviewed Gabrielle so she could tell everybody what she has been doing. Gabrielle said she had an amazing time at the Trout Fishing in America concert. Gabrielle was surprised to be the leader of the conga line. "I just got in front of Nicholas," she said. "I didn't know the other kids would follow me." There were over 100 kids in the conga line! Gabrielle's favorite song was a song about ducks. She liked it because the singer was being silly and made the song last longer and longer! Gabrielle was invited to a science birthday party for her friend, Miles. Her favorite part was finding pretend fossils in his sandbox. She also liked making something called "gooey gunk" which is really stretchy. She had a "fantastic" time. In the Rhythm and Dance class that my mom teaches and I assist, we have been teaching dances from around the world. Gabrielle's favorite dance is the Irish Jig. She likes it because it "tires her out!" She also liked the Korean Fan Dance because it was so different from the way we usually dance. Gabrielle loves soccer! She has just started her first year playing on a soccer team. She likes kicking the ball, running around the field and trying to score a goal! Gabrielle is on the Orange Team and loves wearing her team shirt! |
