Golden retrievers are second in popularity only to Labrador retrievers. Being large, furry, and full of life they require daily grooming, exercise and lots attention. If you are looking for a companion to share an active outdoor lifestyle or to compete in obedience, agility or field trials this may be the dog for you. But you should start by asking your self if you have the time. A single golden will require you to meet all of its needs emotional as well as physical. Being a large, emotional, sporting breed the golden retriever needs to be exercised, groomed, and loved on a daily basis. A golden that is not exercised will grow fat and unhealthy, one that is not groomed will develop mats and skin problems, but one that is not loved will whither away becoming a shadow of the dog he could be. I urge any one who is looking to share their life with a golden to consider golden retriever rescue first. If rescue is unable to meet your needs then start by visiting local dog shows and studying the breed. Finding a golden puppy whos parents have champion pedigrees, excellent temperaments, and carry clearances will take time but with training, exercise, and preventative care you will be rewarded for 12-14 years.
