Teaching Philosophy
| Anytime you can relax you
can do better. I teach in order to share the wisdom I have been taught in
learning how to be present in the moment and to offer people another way
from the way of violence. My father taught me, the best defense is one
with no offensiveness. The postures I teach and the movements we can build
from them offer a vigorous exercise of the body, the spirit, and the mind
without injury or competitiveness.
Gojukido enables one to expel tensions, whether they arise from frustrations or anger, without injury to self; others, or the environment. The forms or exercises help you attain balance and strength and a heightened awareness of the five senses and the joyfulness of being alive. (Gojukido is the Japanese form of karate and involves less physical contact than other forms. The way of Gojukido teaches us to control the spirit, then let it guide our bodies. It is a functional and peaceful, philosophy, active in toning our motions and our motivations.
When tones, thoughts, or feelings, individually different, combine to form a consistent and pleasing whole, there is harmony. (from the World Dictionary of the Encyclopedia Britannica). "Go Yoga" is great for those just starting with Yoga and Tai Chi and provides yet another way to laugh and be healthy. Once again we thank you and wish others the same success as we did in using the "Go Yoga" instructional video. -- Mr. Habakkuk Ammishaddia, Program Director, YouthBiz, Inc., Denver, Colorado. I wanted to write and thank you for your tremendous presentation to our Professional Development Program. ... We see a wide array of speakers here and have never experienced this level of clarity of purpose previously. I am sure each of our staff will greatly benefit from the new stress relief techniques as well as the "pre-battle" routine as we call it. -- Gregory L. Brown, Financial Consultant, Merrill Lynch, Boulder, Colorado. My son and I have been studying with Larry Kishiyama for two years I think he is outstanding as an instructor for the following reasons: (1) His philosophy is non-combative; (2) He is patient with even the slowest students; (3) His style of Gojukido combines well with his philosophy of Ai Imawa to benefit development of physical skills and powers of mental concentration.-- R. A. Polizzi, M.D., West Palm Beach, Florida. I wish to extend to you my sincerest appreciation for the opportunity your program afforded me while I was with the Cheyenne Police Department. --Robert Ortega, Probation and Parole Officer, Cheyenne, Wyoming. I have known Larry Kishiyama for five years. After reading his book I arranged to have him speak and demonstrate different forms fo karate at McCormick Junior High School in Cheyenne, Wyoming, where I teach. His philosophy emphasizes the need for better inter-human relations, eliminating physical or any other type of violence as a means of achieving a goal.--Ben Valdez. |
My colleagues and I at the Asian-American Educational Opportunity Program at the University of Colorado in Boulder are intrigued by the possibility of your doing a Tai Chi class in our program.--Phil Hays. I would like to express my appreciation to you for working with the young people from low income families in the Cheyenne area. Their karate lessons have been memorable ones. It is my hope, as well as John Velez's (Neighborhood Center director) that you could start another program.--Jeanne Giligannon, Executive Director, Community Action of Laramie County, Inc., Laramie, Wyoming. I am a physical therapist. In the last three years I have studied karate with Mr. Kishiyama and have seen the response to his class. I feel his program is well thought through; none of his exercises would harm the average out-of-shape American. My only caution would be with the person who has had a history of medical problems; that person should consult with a physician first.--Jim Richardson, R.P.T., Colorado Physical Therapy Service, Boulder, Colorado. I want to thank you for your advice concerning the exercise program you set up for my 90 year-old friend. As you know, he suffered from a series of strokes and was confined to a wheelchair. After two weeks of practice with the healing postures and breathing exercises, he really started to enjoy our sessions and showed great improvement in strength and coordination, and was more confident in everything he did. --Richard Ohmer, Adventurer, Boulder, Colorado. I have had the good fortune to have Larry Kishiyama conduct self-defense seminars for my security officers. We have found that they have given the officers knowledge and training to protect themselves and our guests in serious situations they might face. We plan to have these seminars on a regular basis.--Charles Gillotti, Security Director, Holiday Inn, Cheyenne, Wyoming. Seldom in a lifetime does one encounter a master.--Dr. Raymond Polizzi about Larry Kishiyama.
