Rodan

AKA
Monster Zero-Two
(Page 2)
While the monster would make several stock footage cameos through the 70's, Rodan wouldn't make his triumphant return to film until midway through Godzilla's Heisei era in the early 90's.  1993's Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, to be exact.  The updated Rodan was a resident of Andonoa Island, and is discovered protecting the nest he was born from.  Godzilla invades the island, and Rodan becomes threatened and does battle with the giant behemoth, a battle Rodan ultimatly loses.  During the struggle, Japanese scientists retrieve the final egg from Rodan's nest, which turns out to be the egg of a Baby Godzilla.  Noticing his "brother" missing from the nest, Rodan leaves the island and invades Japan in search of him.  Godzilla surfaces in Japan as well, in search of the little tyke.  G-Force unleashes their new weapons Mechagodzilla and Garuda to battle the two titans.  The battle wages on, until eventually Godzilla is killed and Rodan is mortally wounded.  Hearing the cries of the Baby Godzilla witnessing his father's demise, Rodan munsters his last strength to transfer his life force to Godzilla.  And thus, the King of the Monsters was reborn, promptly destroying Mechagodzilla and Garuda, and adopting the Baby Godzilla as his own.

Rodan had another 11 years to wait before returning to the screen in some form, this time in 2004's epic
Godzilla:  Final Wars, which once again reinvented the creature.  Rodan once again found himself under the control of the invading Xillians, and is unleashed upon New York City.  Once the Xillians learn of the threat of Godzilla, they unleash several monsters to challenge him.  Godzilla promptly defeats them all, until the Xillians eventually decide to send more than one monster against him.  The Xillians team up Rodan with Anguirus and King Ceasar, and the three monsters do their best to take down Godzilla at Mt. Fuji.  But Godzilla proves to be too powerful, and the three monsters were defeated.  However, Godzilla showed them mercy, and spared their lives in the end.

While Toho used Rodan quite often through the Showa series, since then they've only used him sparingly.  I find this rather odd, because I always thought Rodan was considered popular both in Japan and out.  Consider the fact that since Rodan's appearance in
Destroy All Monsters he has only appeared twice.  Compare this to Mothra, who has appeared seven times (eight if you count a cameo appearance in Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla).  I think it's about time for Rodan to get his due, personally.  He needs another starring role feature, like Mothra had in the 90's.  This is probably not likely, though, since Toho will no doubt save him for a suporting role in any future Godzilla series they plan to develope.  Hopefully we won't have to wait long.
