| The fourth continuity of the Millennium series proved to be the richest of the five. 2002's Godzilla X Mechagodzilla not only embraced the original Godzilla, King of the Monsters into continuity, but a wealth of other Toho kaiju films as well. The ones aknowledged being Mothra and War of the Gargantuas (including Frankenstein Conquers the World by relation), while leaving many other non-G films open to continuity as well, such as Rodan, Varan the Unbelievable, and Atragon. After being attacked many times over by various monsters, Japan's military forms a special section for monster defense. In 1999, a giant reptile rises from the deep, Japan's worst fears have been realized, another Godzilla has been born. The creature layed dormant for four years, while Japan constructed the ultimate weapon to combat it and any other monster that threatened them. Using the remains of the the original 1954 Godzilla, they constructed a gaint robot around them. This new Mechagodzilla was nicknamed Kiryu, and is the greatest weapon the world has ever seen. When Godzilla emerges once again, Kiryu is taken for a test run. Kiryu is immediatly effective on the monster, however when Godzilla roared in defiance, Kiryu halted on it's own. The disturbed soul of the original Godzilla was awakened by the call of it's brother. Kiryu went berserk, and attacked Tokyo, leaving a confused Godzilla to just wonder back into the sea. Kiryu's power supply eventually died down and was taken back to headquarters where it's fate was debated. However, a few days later, Godzilla rose from the water again to complete his rampage. Japan had no choice but to deploy Kiryu again and hope the soul inside never awakened. Kiryu and Godzilla battled for a lengthy period, before it was time for Kiryu to deploy it's primary weapon, Absolute Zero, which would freeze the beast in an icy tomb and hopefully kill it. Absolute Zero is fired, but Godzilla breaks free of his icy prison. He wonders back into the sea, defeated. In the only continuation of the Millennium series, 2003's Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. followed where Godzilla X Mechagodzilla left off a year later. Godzilla rises yet again to continue his rampage. However, before the newly repared Kiryu could be deployed, Godzilla is challenged by a fully adult Mothra. Godzilla and Mothra battle into the night, an eventually Kiryu joins in. Godzilla eventually kills Mothra with his radioactive breath, but the insect was about to be reborn from a giant egg on Infant Island. Two little Mothra larvae hatch and head to Tokyo to join the melee. Kiryu and the two larvae battle with all their might, but Godzilla is too powerful. A crippled Kiryu finally launches itself into Godzilla and latches onto him. Kiryu flies into the sea, were it falls into the water, sinking both itself and Godzilla into the abyss. In Godzilla's final appearance to date, 2004's Godzilla: Final Wars, the past of the monster is not built upon, all we know is that he first appeared in 1954. The Godzilla of this continuity was imprisoned in the Antartic at an unsaid period in the past. However, when the evil Xillians come from space to invade Earth with multipal monsters, the flying submarine Gotengo frees Godzilla in hopes that it will combat the monsters and save the Earth. The Gotengo leads Godzilla on a multi-country campaign to annihilate the likes of Zilla, Kumonga, Kamacuras, Rodan, King Ceasar, Anguirus, Hedorah, and Ebirah. While the humans enter final battle with the Xillians, Godzilla teams up with Mothra to do battle with Monster X and Gigan. Mothra destroys Gigan, leaving Godzilla and Monster X in the middle of a one on one duel. Monster X eventually mutates into a creature that resembles King Ghidorah, dubbed Keiser Ghidorah. The monster proves to be powerful, but Godzilla eventually conquers it as well, proving he is the true King of the Monsters. Godzilla briefly considers attacking his human allies, but his son Minilla convinces him otherwise. Godzilla silently turns around and heads out to sea. The only hint we have of Godzilla's future at the moment is a proposed IMAX project entitled Godzilla 3D to the Max, which may be made, and may not. Toho's next official Godzilla film will probably not be until around 2014, but there's one thing you can be certain of...Godzilla will be back. Previous Page |
