The blood analysis that Mulder had performed had confirmed that it was indeed Scully's blood on the chair. Fear griped him, as he tried to speculate what had happened. Who was here with Scully? How did they find her? How did they know what she knew? Why would they have been careless enough to leave the chair with Scully's blood on it behind? In any case, it was obvious that he wouldnt find Scully here. Or William. It was approaching office hours, and agents would be arriving soon, so he had to leave. He turned off the computer and left, knowing that if too much attention was drawn to what happened, it could place him, Scully or William in danger. Mulder had just opened the door to the Hacienda hotel room he and Scully were staying in when the phone rang. The hotel phone had caller ID, and Mulder recognised the number. Agent Doggett? How did you get this number? Mulder, what happened to Scully? Why is she in hospital? Scully's in hospital? Questions flowed out of Mulder's mouth before he had a chance to process them. Is she ok? What happened? Which hospital? Wh- Wait you dont know? No. All I know is that she wasnt where she said shed meet me Doggett sighed. Shes fine. Shes asleep now. The attending nurse said she was in a car accident, but there seems to be some questions about that. Shes in the Trinity hospital. He decided that Mulder should hear the rest from Scully. Ill be right there. Mulder said, and he hung up.
Scullys eyelids fluttered open, and for a brief second, she had forgotten all that she had lost. But in an instant she remembered everything, and she closed her eyes, wishing to return to that blissfully ignorant state. Suddenly, her efforts were interrupted by a noise outside. Her head turned towards the door. A panicked voice cried; Where is she? Which room is she in? It sounded like Mulder, but it couldnt be. She must have been hearing things. But then the door opened and Mulder rushed towards her. Shocked, she threw her arms around him. Mulder, oh my god! Why arent you answering your phone? I lost my phone yesterday he explained, wrapping his arms around her. Scully let out a quick sigh of relief. She struggled to get her words out. I thought you were dead she said in a whisper, which was all her unsteady voice would allow. She finally gave in and cried in Mulder's arms. No, Im ok he said, but he sensed that there was more. Scully, what happened? But she was crying so much that she couldnt reply.
When Scully had calmed down enough to talk, Mulder asked her again. Scully, what happened? She would have to tell him eventually, he had the right to know, but she desperately wanted to hide the truth from him to protect him. But if she did so, she knew she would be working against him, so she reluctantly pulled out of his embrace. Mulder she began. She wasnt sure how to tell him, so she decided to simply say it. She held his hand and took a deep, shaky breath. Williams dead. |
