Part Eight
You son of a bitch Scully said coldly
You have to the count of three, Rodgers said. One, two
Wait! Scully said, panicking. She would have to tell them. She drew in a deep shaky breath. Alright. I agreed to meet him at the Lincoln memorial park last night. He may still be there. If not, he may return to the Hacienda, a motel in New Mexico Mulder and I stayed at the night before. Or, he may be looking for me, in which case he would probably go to the research facility where you found me, or to the morgue. Now Ive told you all I know, let me go and give me my baby! but instead, smoking man slit the babys neck. NO! Scully screamed. You son of a bitch! Ill kill you, you bastard!
Smoking man looked at Rodgers expectantly, but Rodgers was hesitant. All of this was unnoticed by Scully, who struggled with the cuffs around her wrists, trying to free herself. Finally, Rodgers went over to Scully and held her in place.
What are you doing!? Scully exclaimed. The smoking man approached them both, taking out a syringe from his front pocket and pulling the cover off. What is that?! Scully yelled. Rodgers held Scully still while smoking man injected the syringe into Scully's arm. Whats in that?! Scully yelled, growing weary and beginning to slur. What did you inject- and then the world went black.

When Scully came to, she was in a hospital bed.
Oh, youre awake a nurse in the room said. Scully looked around, and then remembered what had happened.
I was injected with something. What was it?
We found traces of an anaesthetic in your bloodstream
How did I get here?
A woman with blonde hair dropped you off. They said you had been in a car accident not far from here. If that was the case, then Id say you were very lucky, your injuries were very minimal. Although were all stumped as to how the anaesthetic got into your system. But your baby miss, Im so sorry. We couldnt save him. Scully lowered her eyes. If you want to talk-
No Scully interrupted. No, Id like to be alone. The nurse nodded sympathetically and left the room. Scully couldnt believe it. William was gone. Not just gone to live in another state with other parents, but really gone. She was overcome with guilt. What made her think that someone else could protect him if she couldnt? What made her think that he would be safer with people who knew nothing about aliens or super soldiers or the conspiracy and could therefore not protect him from those things? And then she remembered. Mulder. She had to warn him about the smoking man. She picked up the bedside phone and dialled his cell phone. It seemed like for ever that she waited, but he did not answer. That smoking son of a bitch had gotten to him. She hung up the phone, pulled her knees up to her chest, and then she buried her head in her knees and cried. The two most important people in her life were gone.

John Doggett lay in bed for a few moments, his thoughts on Mulder and Scully. He had been anxious about them recently. They were supposed to have left the States two days ago, and he wondered if they had made it safely. Doggetts alarm finally sounded and he got up and dressed. He made his way to the kitchen and was about to pop some bread into the toaster when he noticed something on the floor near his door. He picked it up and read through it. Its contents made his jaw drop.

Doggett placed the letter on Monica Reyes desk. The X-Files were closed, but Doggett and Reyes were not out of a job, as long as they agreed not to pursue any cases pertaining to the paranormal. They were hardly giving up, but they knew that they were less useful to Mulder and Scully off the bureau.
What is it? Reyes asked
Read it. Reyes picked up the letter and skimmed through it.
It says that agent Scully is in hospital. Here. Theyre supposed to have left the States by now. Doggett nodded in agreement. Who sent it to you?
I dont know. It didnt say. Reyes stood up and picked up her coat. Monica, were not supposed to-
Theres nothing paranormal about this. Im just taking a personal day to visit a friend in hospital.
What a coincidence. So am I

By the time Doggett and Reyes arrived, Scully had fallen asleep. Rather than wake her, they decided to try and contact Mulder. The letter also mentioned several places to contact him, so agent Doggett pulled out his cell phone and dialed the number of the first location Mulder could be at. After all, the letter was right about Scully.
