TEMS,
part of the Avionics/Electronic Warfare Test Division,
is located at the Avionics Test & Integration
Complex (ATIC). It provides developmental test and evaluation (DT&E)
and operational test and evaluation (OT&E) flight test programs with piloted
real-time simulations and non-piloted non-real-time simulation. TEMS primarily
supports airframe-propulsion-avionics and electronic warfare testing. The precise
control, flexibility, and repeatability in these simulations are paramount in
implementing a predict-test-compare philosophy, using knowledge gained through
ground testing before going into flight test.
TEMS is also
used to predict flight test results which ensure that flight tests are
focused on areas of maximum benefit. Flight crews may also use procedures,
configurations, and manuevers which may be impossible or unsafe to accomplish
in flight.
TEMS capabilities
include:
- Tactical environment simulation
- Mission and campaign level simulation
- Closed-loop flying qualities test support
- Envelope expansion
- Flight test maneuver definition/development/practice
- Mission rehearsals
- Pilot and engineer familiarization
- Flight control systems functional testing to include
- failure states
- aerodynamic model validation
- anomaly investigation
- flight safety evaluations
- effects of stores carriage on flying qualities
- stores separation and weapons delivery accuracy
- Crew member, flight test engineer, and USAF Test Pilot School training
- F-16 emergency procedures training
- Spacecraft re-entry and landing
- Human factors and aircrew/air vehicle interface (visual, tactile, aural)
- Operational air combat maneuvering (one vs. one) through real-time
connection to the F-16 Integrated Avionics Test Station in the IFAST.
These capabilities are
vastly different from those provided by simulators used in aircrew training
environments. A typical TEMS test complex has a cockpit with an out-the-window
scene generation system, multi-function display capability and aircraft
cockpit controls and switches all driven by real-time computer systems.
Customers can
access test simulations in a user-friendly, interactive manner. These simulations
include aerodynamics, propulsion, flight controls, avionics, electronic
warfare sensors, tactical environment, mission and campaign level, and
overall flying qualities. These and other TEMS resources provide a
set of powerful engineering capabilities our customers can use to determine
baseline dynamics and to investigate the effects of varying parameters
on aircraft and subsystem behavior.
