Tarpum Bay Waterfront in winter- Painting
By Eleuthera Artist Kevin Cooper Weather Warm, mild weather today in Eleuthera. Some chance of rain today, some scattered clouds that formed but the story is that there is no rain today. Nothing in sight to interfere with Homecoming holidays here in Tarpum Bay and Eleuthera. The high today still a warm 89 degrees Fahrenheit. Tonight’s low will be in the lower eighties. So for today in Eleuthera some nice warm weather. Today is a great day for the outdoors, sports activity and fishing. Enjoy our Eleuthera weather today. News, Articles and Poetry In the news today an Eleuthera man takes sick with a mild heart attack during the holiday season and is hospitalized in Nassau, Bahamas. All are wishing for better health and a speedy recovery. Good health is an important consideration these days especially with middle age men. Over the last year there has been an epidemic of Eleuthera men literally dropping dead from massive heart attacks. More than six men over the past year in Eleuthera have fallen suddenly and died from massive coronary desease. The lack of adequate medical facilities on the island of Eleuthera makes this a lethal medical condition for many Eleuthera men who are not able to get the simple routine checkups without spending time and money to make the trip to Nassau for this necessary diagnosis and treatment. If the necessary treatment and analysis were done these deaths could be avoided leaving the men able to work and further contribute to the development of their families and Eleuthera. Eleutherians have to further petition government to see the necessity to build adequate medical facilities here on Eleuthera. In the area as a whole Eleutherians are not adequately treated. The cost in time and funds seems to be too much of a barrier for Eleutherians to take in order to save themselves and their health. Each settlement on Eleuthera has within it a local medical clinic where treatment and diagnosis is done by the local assigned nurses. Each of the two districts on Eleuthera are attended to by one doctor who rotates his location at a different local clinic in the district each day. In addition there is presently only one government dentist serving the entire island. She does the same by moving into a different settlement each day. Routine, simple diagnosis is done by these medical practitioners who are only armed with the most basic medical equipment. Any lab tests done in the district has to be sent into Nassau by mail boat or by aero plane for further analysis. If the condition is urgent, like a broken limb or similar condition a charter plane is ordered whether day or night by the doctor. The patient is at risk and is continued on to Nassau for further priority emergency treatment. This is a critical situation. The government is aware that the Bahamas, especially the Out Island are tourist havens and why there are not more adequate medical facilities to protect our visitors from emergency tragedy is a mystery to most Eleutherians and Out Islanders. All of the emphasis and expertise in these areas are developed and housed in Nassau and Grand Bahama. Why the government has not moved in more than thirty years of consideration to amend this major medical catastrophe is beyond belief. We on Eleuthera are prayerful and live in
hopes that no tragedy may meet us in our life times and that the need for
more professional medical care in the islands does not arise. All too often however the prayers of too
many are not answered. In other news Homecoming is here and the crowds of people are turning out nightly when events are organized to enjoy the local flavor of Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera. Already it is seen that the event will not be as large this year for several reasons. Firstly, too many events going on on the island at the same time. Hatchet Bay, Governors Harbour and Whymms Bight are all having major advertised holiday events. This did not happen in years gone by. There is more necessity and demand for the homecoming buck. Secondly, the economy of the island are so bad
that not many people have disposable income to spare. Lastly, these events
are becoming too routine and the newness and excitement of such events seems
to be fading. Some changes and local alternatives have to be discussed in
order to rejuvenate the process. Fishing Report The lobster season is almost here. Only a few more days remain before Eleuthera fishermen can know for sure what the lobster season will be like. Hopefully it will be a fruitful one with lots of commerce coming out of the hard work and major risks by our fishermen. Come get your supplies of fresh fish from the docks at Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera every day in the afternoon. See you there. More Daily News from Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera
tomorrow Monday, July 26, 2004 Weather Today’s weather was partially wet and war. Overcast skies with occasional clouds and intermittent rain continued throughout the day. It was a welcome day which was a little cooler than the typical hot end of July day. The overcast skies helped. The high today was around 88degrees Fahrenheit. We are hoping that the weather allows us an
uninterrupted homecoming week. Enjoy our weather and come down to Tarpum Bay
to partake in the Home coming Festival this year. News, Articles and Poetry It’s on folks. Unofficially the Back to the Bay Fest got started tonight. The music and light lighted up the park as the volunteers completed work on the stalls and got the electrical work finished. The bar was open and the girls committee practiced along with the music, their modeling and fashion show. From the first looks of it its gonna be a good festival this year. The only thing we are all worried about is the rain. Will the rain hold up for the event. Thank God that the drought has ended over the last few days but now we have this annual event that needs the atmosphere to be dry. Are you coming out? Come on out and join in the fun at Tarpum Bay this week beginning officially Wednesday night with the annual church service. Until then there’ll be music and an open bar each night. We have lots of friends here for Homecoming all the way so far from Orlando and California, many friends from Nassau here already to enjoy themselves among their friends. We look forward to having many more of you to enjoy the times with and have a good light hearted time. This years event is going to be a special one. Lots of the familiar faces will be involved. This year one of my plays will be performed, that’s going to be exciting. We’ll have to see the response it gets from the audience. Do come down and enjoy yourself in Good old Glenelg( The Old original name for Tarpum Bay.) Fishing Report Sunday the fishermen go out to catch the first
official lobsters of the Crawfish season in the Bahamas. Come get your fresh
supplies of fresh fish at the Docks in Tarpum Bay. See you there. More Daily News from Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera,

Not too hot, only around 88 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s a fabulous day for the outdoors, a barbecue, the beach or both. Enjoy our weather in Eleuthera today. Share it

The shadows of youth no longer haunt me. I know just where I am and long for the many days of the here after when God will have his final say. The embers burn not just for my benefit but for him that concerns himself with mankinds eternity. For I have loved his innocence and cry for his years in the hereafter. My wishes may come true. The imagination of my mind leads me to believe in this love. Come let us journey together. permit me to draw you in to this wonderful enterprise. I have carried so long on my shoulders the contempt of the damned and have arisen today to proclaim my brothers duty. This long freedom is right for mans experience. How I long for the years when we can journey back to this life and smile together at Gods great plan. Brothers from Europe, the Caribbean, the grave, home, and all may join together to sing the praises of the time. Then we'll long together to be alive. We'll then yearn for this enterprise. For to me it means love and brings the tears to my eyes that sooth me with the beauty of both life and love and sister too you are my brother. Your divine love is the treasure my heart seeks for. Some day I might find you willing to share my dream and submit fully to my ideas and dreams. for if I surrender I will loose my freedom to believe in the true nature of our union. The day might come when my faith is restored in your union. Masters cannot surrender but live out their dreams here and here after. I am affected nimbly by your search. Free, I am given to the wind in this giving day. I have arrived at my place, now that the night has gone. Even the thought of you evokes a dream.
Saturday, July 24, 2004 Weather Today in Eleuthera the story is the rain. Cool, long thunder showers ending the almost six month drought. Farmers and citizens in general are pleased that the rainy season is here, a bit late but welcome non the less. Todays high rose to 88 degrees Fahrenheit. Tonights low will dip as low as 78 degrees, a big relief from the usual summer heat, a welcomed situation. The trend is pointing toward more rain in the days to come. We only hope that it doesn’t spoil the homecoming holiday. Enjoy our Eleuthera weather today. News, Articles and Poetry Here it is now, another quiet Saturday night in the village city by the bay. All is quiet except for a few folks down by the seashore and the dock relaxing and enjoying the cool night air and gathering a little conversation. Tonight was the scheduled night for the local South Eleuthera basketball associations Trophy night. Their summer season is closing. Due to todays rain that event is postponed until Wednesday night when hopefully the weather will allow the event to go on. Saturday nights like the traditions in other cities Eleutherians come out for an outing. A chance to socialize with friends and enjoy the scenic sights and events the villages have to offer. In other news around the island of Eleuthera Basket ball camp is the hot news. The National Basketball association and the Jeff Rogers Basket Ball association are in town to continue on with their annual Basket Ball camps. Several international coaches and NBA basket ball stars are in Town for the events being held in North Eleuthera, Central Eleuthera and South Eleuthera. And yes, Scottie Pippin of Chicago Bulls fame is in town as reported by a local kid that thought he had recognized him in Harbour Island a few days ago. He didn’t lie guys, it was Scottie Pippin who is joined by a few other NBA players. So it seems that the much needed international exposure by national organizations like the National Basket Ball Association is being spread outside of our two major cities to the family islands. This is a plausible situation. The Family Islands do need much more exposure to these situations. It is obvious that Eleuthera has a considerable track record in producing both National and international Sports Talent. People like internationally famous runner Chris Brown of Whyms Bight, Basket Ball Star Dexter Cambridge of Hatchet Bay, Soft ball pitcher Richard the Lion Heart Johnson, International Softball Pitcher Dougie Smith and many others who have been proven to be of great integrity and talent. The fact is that our sports program locally has deteriorated because of the necessary displacement of our most talented sports persons who have migrated to other cities around the globe and continue to contribute in these venues. Some rejuvenation of our local talent is warranted and necessary. Hopefully in the future after some development has taken place some of these talented sports people will return and resume their place in developing once again the very active sports activities Eleuthera was known for in the past. In other news Mr. Luke Carey will be getting
Married next week to his long time girl. The wedding will take place next
week Thursday at the Brethren Church right here in Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera. We
all wish the couple the best of everything in the future. Last nights potentially tragic incident in Tarpum Bay which ended in the overturning of a Vehicle in a populated area of the village ended with positive results. The driver escaped fatal injury and apparently escaped with only broken fingers in the roll over. The incident is reportedly being investigated by the local authorities. We wish a speedy recovery for the persons involved in the unfortunate accident. Fishing Report The lobster season is almost here. The opening of the season is only a week away. The delicious seafood will be available in large quantities hopefully as much this year as in the past. Fisherman and researchers are presently quite unaware of the amount of the much sought after delicacy there is available in our waters for harvesting. We’ll have to keep hoping that our conservation efforts in closing the season each year for six months is paying off by allowing the crustacean to reproduce more effectively. Hopefully irresponsible fisherman, of which there are some, are not breaking the law by continually taking lobster out of season. This practice is reported on occasion and must discontinue if the species is to survive for the next generation. Presently quantities of summer fish are being harvested with some success. Conch is still getting scarce. On occasion conch is available for sale however it is quite evident that the species is depleted to some extend. It remains to be seen how much of the stocks survive the year round heavy harvesting of this other great delicacy in our local market. Get your supplies of fresh seafood at the
Docks in Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera daily each afternoon. More News From Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera,

home/start page Weather: Todays News is the rain. Today it poured down in Tarpum Bay directly for at least thirty minutes of heavy rain. Hopefully this means a turn around in the local drought situation and will not have a negative effect on the upcoming Back to the Bay Homecoming Next Weekend. Additionally it sunny with occasional gathered clouds. We might get another down pour later tonight. The high today is 91 degrees Fahrenheit. The low tonight will get down into the middle 80’s. The atmosphere is hot with little breeze flowing over the landscape. It’s a great day for the outdoors or the beach. Enjoy our Eleuthera weather when you are able
to. News, Articles and Poetry: Slowly and quietly there is a quiet revolution fueled through the many meainingful exchanges taking place at Eleuthera based websites and going on in Eleuthera. There is a collection of concerned local citizens and expatriate visitors who are making the connection and making Eleuthera work for the better by assisting personally, pointing out and influencing some of their local friends to make an effort and take the correct approach in maintaining the island of Eleuthera, our tourism industry and the Bahamas collectively. This new dimension has been the means of reaching out to those persons searching for an ideal exotic, tropical place to relax and enjoy the good life that is comprised of Freedom, Friendliness and security. This new breed of concerned people are beginning to make a meaningful impact on the local social network and the investment community. A new awareness is brewing and visitors through their personal contacts and through message boards and emails are getting their concerns across. One of the major points of contention with their vacationing on the island of Eleuthera is that they are becoming aware of the native concern and the governments lackadaisical approach to garbage disposal and littering. These incidents of littering seem to be pervasive, endemic and on the rise and are understandably appalling to our international guests. There are many complaints about things like the garbage littered on the sides of the highways while driving and touring the otherwise beautiful Eleutherian landscape. There seems to be a lack of awareness in the local environment concerning just how much of a commitment the local citizens have to have in order to maintain a more pleasant, clean environment. Where are the forces of unemployed people who should be encouraged and budgeted properly in order to control this disposal and littering problem in every community on the island of Eleuthera. These are simple but obvious points of contention raised by our visiting tourists and can easily have a negative impact on their decision to return. The littering of the beach is another issue raised in many discussions between our visitors and their local friends and hosts. For example the amount of broken glass present on our beautiful beaches frequented by locals is both a disgusting eyesore and a critical danger to our enchanted visitors walking our beaches even so much more than we do ourselves. Personally, I am ridiculed by local friends who criticize me and tease for the fact that I collect my refuse in the passenger floor of my vehicle and discard the accumulated amounts at some convenient point into a public or private trash bin. Apparently to my surprise this is not a normal practice among our native community. Repeatedly I am told of incidents where drivers pass by local communities and the first thing that comes out of the windows of some of these vehicles are bottles, cans, and food wrappers. Essentially through education these attitudes have to change. Litter laws have to be further enforced by the local police and health/environment administrators if we are to get a grip of this vexing problem of litter. Many visitors tell me that compared to their enforcement laws and their local environments Eleuthera’s roadside littering is deplorable. They insist that if it were not for the absolute beauty of the beaches, the tranquility and the security of their housing environments they would not return to Eleuthera principally because of the litter problem. I agree as well that there is much of a lack of awareness in terms of the upkeep of the environment of Eleuthera. Some efforts have been made in the past to curb this litter problem by the government and the local government boards but what is more disturbing is the fact that the problem continues even after the cleanup campaigns. The litter just continues to return. This is alarming and appalling when one realizes how insensitive our local community is to issues of a clean environment and garbage disposal. In terms of these issues we seem to be losing the battle and no effective change is being realized in these matters. This is sad and alarming when we all are aware that our economy is based on appealing to tourists for our livelihood. How can we expect to offend them and at the same time encourage them to return to our shores? Collectively this makes no sense. Keep your Bahamas Clean. Like the national slogan goes, Keep eleuthera clean and pristine. If we mend our habits, with the other beautiful elements in people and the environment that we have our future will be virtually guaranteed. Visitors will want to return to the cleanest, pride filled Tropical Island in the western Hemisphere. Hopefully a curriculum in the public schools can address this situation with a view to changing the mindset of the younger generation and remind them that their future is directly linked to tourism and the success of that matters highly on the opinion of our visiting guests. Change is difficult but we must make the
transition and collectively accept the responsibility towards eliminating
litter in our community. More Daily News From Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera

home/start page Tuesday, July 20, 2004 Eleuthera, The Star Apple Kingdom That Was. It alludes me and behooves me now a days when I remember the Eleuthera of my childhood. When I reminisce and contemplate the Eleuthera of yester year, the economy and social structure that built our larger villages like Governors Harbour and Rock Sound, I am astounded at how we have come this far and how we have dipped so low on the global scale of economic survival. Daily now I am reminded with images of utter poverty and desperation. I remember candy dreams and an economic structure that allowed every South Eleutherian to have multiple jobs, multiple bank accounts and multiple opportunities that if guarded correctly could have taken him or her to the top of the world in an economic sense. Why now we are on the brink of economic and social disaster are topics which occupy me when I am in a mood to ponder economic change. How the elaborate elegance of a golf village like Cape Eleuthera in the early seventies now lies as a discarded ruin is beyond my imagination. How a government firstly and a people can be so cavalier with their means of existence is beyond my capability and still lies as an economic nightmare we may wake up from one day. This gross failure in the second largest local economy in the Bahamas in the late sixties, early seventies is but a gross failure for which no political party in the Bahamas or the local community wishes to take responsibility for. In my opinion we must make a study of this economic disaster in order to take stock at exactly which flaw lies at the bottom of this visible economic failure. We must acknowledge the failure and implement change in order to avoid similar economic future failures. I can propose some plans, establish a government led commission to maintain developed properties at any cost. Maintain and sell off failed tourism/hotel properties. Allow a greater investment participation of local Eleutherians. In other words put your heart into the matter. Thus far no one has stepped up to the plate in Government or on the local scene to examine the correct impetus for this our largest single failure in Eleuthera as a people. For I believe that if we truly examine and are able to correctly point out the failure of this economic downturn of epidemic proportions we will have a blue print for the future and emerge as a stronger people capable of dealing with a growing successful economy. Our isolation and division as a people concerned singularly with personal economic benefit and personal prosperity bears closer examination. Our needs individually are such that we are dependent on each others information and guidance to direct us on the upward path out of our economic blight and growing poverty. Partisan politics is at the heart of most of what ails us. Gross privilege to national and local resources for the politically loyal lies at the heart of the matter directly. We have not shed our third world political mentality, this lies at the heart of the matter. We have not entered into a national modern political arena. Our leaders be they local or national must take the responsibility and step forward to fill the economic void by more personal investment and revenue sharing in the market place of Eleuthera. Their absence from the scene of the crime and their inability to generate and share is at the heart of some of the economic matters that plague South and Central Eleuthera. Success in the market place must be viewed as much more than personal gain. More thriving economies tend to and have economic sharing and a more equal sharing of the national wealth than is existent in our local economy. Secrecy and apathy strike to the heart of the matter as well. Why some prosper, some die, some starve are caught up in a endemic cycle of poverty which is now appearing and is more pervasive in our society than before. Resources are drained to a minimum and how long are people expected to survive in a stagnant economy without any visible evidence of development, other than and aside from the media deceit and perceptions announced by an apparently non-caring government. Eleuthera used to be the jewel of the Bahamas, some thirty years ago. Who is responsible and accountable for the mismanagement of such an economy to the point to where people have been forced to flee the island in search of employment and education, scattered randomly throughout the cities of the world? Who claims responsibility? It is more tangible than we perceive. Some exact measures lie at the bottom of this failure and if we are to have a blueprint for success in the future first the original mistake must be corrected. How can our future expect to change when we have not confessed and admitted to the failures of the past? Why do we wish to go on with the same unchanged convictions needed in principal to correct and guide our economy into a successful future? The answer does not lie in uncontrolled, unsubstantiated government announcements. The local economy of Eleuthera has waited for more than thirty years for revival. The wolf has been cried. The writing is on the walls. Are we in for an unsuccessful future? How long can we continue to survive at a minimum and without the economic encouragement needed to sustain our growth. Who will be the new heroes to invest millions
in a ruined economy without substantiated leaders willing to guide daily the
population they promised to represent? Is this monster too big to control and
turn around? Saturday, July 17, 2004 Weather: Finally some rain late lastnight. It had a good rain to break the long drought spell here in Tarpum Bay. Farmers and others depending on the rain are very happy about last nights rain. Todays weather is sunny and bright with
occasional clouded skies and a good chance of rain today or tonight. The
temperature is around 88 degrees Fahrenheit with a cool breeze over the
landscape. This is typical summer weather for Eleuthera. It’s a wonderful day

News, Articles and Poetry: In the news today Palma Morley and Johnny from Whymms Bight got married today in a large ceremony at the Methodist church here in Tarpum Bay. They are having a big celebration and reception at the Royal Castle bottom of Bernard Hill here in Tarpum Bay this evening and going into tonight. A live band and a DJ will be playing the music as native dishes and drinks will be served. All are invited. Remember that Tarpum Bay’s Back to the Bay homecoming will be held two weeks from now. For a good time come to Tarpum Bay. Thursday, July 15, 2004 News, Articles, and Poetry: Remember that our Back To The Bay homecoming is about to begin here in Tarpum Bay at the end of the month leading into the beginning of August. If your looking to experience one of the best homecomings on the island annually make this a pilgrimage along with the other thousands of Bay men who converge on our tiny sea side village each year around this time. It is going to be a spectacular event beginning with a church on Wednesday night and going through till that following Monday night when it will end. Lots of great events are planned this year including such things as our annual fire works display, our fashion show, Skits, the annual dance and many other events. If you are a fan of this village come and meet the others as we celebrate in our grand Bahamian style. Hatchet Bay will also be holding their annual homecoming at this time as well. The entire island will be abuzz with events. Article: One thing I remember from 1983. The fear and isolation I felt while in the middle of New York City, alone. Roaming around the city while on a day tour out of the curiosity of seeing what the city of New York had to offer. Gripped with isolation and fear, I did not sleep the whole night. Though I got to see some of the great sites the city had to offer like central park, St. Georges Cathedral, Madison Square Gardens, 42nd Street, Broad Way, the Rockets, The Carnegie Deli, The Central Park Hotel and Time Square among many other memorable sights I did not relax and enjoy them for their intrinsic value. Meeting a New Yorker was an impossibility, Cab drivers, passers by and others busy with their day did not spend the time to smile, wave or ask how my day was going. I compare that with the life I have found again in my native island, Eleuthera, Bahamas. Today here I’ve found certain peace, tranquility and a definite security that makes all the difference in life. The abundance of local friends and people concerned with the welfare of all people they know. The kindness to hail, speak and inquire directly as to the day one is having is one of the treasures anyone would find should they visit our village or island. Those little things mean so much and make the difference in the daily lives of all those touched by such human amenities. The well being of the human being is still the center of attention and paramount among our citizens. For twelve years now I have made this seaside village my home again and my daily experience has become the most important find in my busy life. I have experienced and found exactly what I have sought after for so many years while working after college and contemplating which city of the world would be my home. The peacefulness, security and tranquility have allowed me to find the inspiration I sought after to become a Novelist. I was afforded the time and concentration needed to gather ones thoughts and author more than six novels and lately now three screen plays. In short, I would not trade this experience with any other I’ve had in life and I found it almost by mistake by taking the chance I took to find this place I love so much in life. That truly is a find. The one place on earth where I found the solace and security I needed to call home. To find myself among the people I love is an experience I will treasure for a lifetime. Although challenged with day-to-day commitments the overall experience of this seaside village is above all I have found on my worldwide travels during my years of insecurity, searching and experimentation. It was here all the while; I just had to discover it. Discovering paradise in a place among people is the greatest treasure of my life. Without being too personal I wish that more people were able to discover similar stability in a place in the world whether in a city or on an island. I wish this great personal experience for you. Sitting under the gazebo tonight with some friends I peered out over the calm seas and saw the distant golden streams of light emanating from the distant street lights across the water. The waterfront filled with people out for the evening, all searching for some place to feel the coolness of the night air and forget the stirring heat and stresses of the day. Voices drifted in from distant people discussing and joking about the days events and other news. The immense tranquility, security and peacefulness of the moment reminded me of the search I had earlier in life to find a home. Why I had to go abroad on my own and leave behind such peacefulness and security are still a mystery but a necessary travel undertaken by so many of my fellow islanders that it seemed the natural progression of the time. In order to appreciate what you have, lose it for a moment and imagine what you have lost compared to what you have found. Tonight I reminisced and realized what I have found in finding a home in this little village by the sea. The enormity of what we have socially and personally dawned on me tonight in the cool night air of the seashore and I knew that I had to share it with you. Aside from the security of home summers seaside village has so much to offer. One day soon I’ll leave for some short vacation or some trip abroad and once again realize the enormity of the offerings summers seaside village that is our home in Eleuthera and Tarpum Bay. Paradise is a place within. Paradise is a place I longed for and found. Days like today remind me of my search for meaning and as close to absolute security on earth as I have found in my return home. Fishing Report: Fishermen are preparing for the upcoming lobster season to begin August 1st. That’s the single largest event for Bahamian fishing annually.
