Game Concepts
Unreal Tournament Mecha (UT Mecha) draws it's inspiration from several sources-
"Giant Robot" anime such as Gasaraki, Mobile Police Patlabor, Mobile Suit V Gundam, and the Heavy Gear RPG-where the robots tend to be smaller and more agile and fight more like people than tanks.
Cyberpunk fiction, including Blade Runner, Snow Crash, R. Talsorian Games Cyberpunk 2020 and the Bubble Gum Crisis Anime.
Several other mods, including Half Life's Science and Industry, Unreal Tournament's Infiltration.
The basic concept is this-allowing players to fight on a battlefield with both robots and people, develop and deploy new technologies, and to win the various corporate wars with a minimum of fuss and hassle.
Some of the design principals behind the robots (called Linear Combat Arrays or LCAs) include-
They're powered by a combination of micro-fusion cells and super-conductor loop "batteries". Since the energy weapons are directly powered by the fusion cell/loop system (as well as the motive units), you can run out of power if you fire a big energy weapon too much, or use boosted speed measures such as hover fans or rocket boosters.
Most of the LCA's weapons are mounted on either hard points or carried in the LCA's hands. Hard points are (usually) the shoulders, forearms, back, upper leg, and waist. Some weapons can only be fired from the hard points (such as missile packs), some are carried in the hands, and others are mounted to use both the hard points and the hands.
Most of the LCA is modular-you can swap out sensors, internal equipment such as ECM packs and targeting computers, reactors and similar. Most of the parts can either be salvaged from destroyed enemy LCAs or built by your own side.
They're fairly small-the largest of all the LCA types tops off at about 12 meters tall.
To the soldiers on the ground, they are distinctive as well-
They do carry weapons that can do major to fatal damage to a LCA, but these tend to be bulky and will slow down a solider when deployed.
Each of the corporations has a "technology tree" that they can upgrade their soldiers with. Also, the technology can be stolen by a team that sneaks into an enemy base and carries away the science modules, or "purchased" by the teams.
The four corporations, outside of several "core" weapons and upgrades, has different philosophies on how to upgrade their soldiers in terms of guns and accessories.
Technology development is dependent upon both the number of scientists you capture and any upgrades to the labs that your players make. All technology developments are decided by a team-wide vote-the top choice is the one developed, with the next choice getting some R&D until it's developed.
