| July 5, 2004 Let's be honest...my triumphant return to columnism probably isn't worthy of such grand mafioso proclamations. I have taken longer breaks than this between columns with considerably less fanfare. And sure, I appreciated everyone's encouragement...whether your method was kindly telling me how much you would miss my column or violently questioning my manhood, it was obvious that you cared. But honestly, there is no "they" that is making me start this page back up again. I'm doing it for me. I never fully explained to anyone why I stopped writing in the first place. First and foremost, I was suffering from a major case of writer's block. I was completely lacking for new column ideas and was tired of running the same old Sports Guy formats that I have been using for two years. Secondly, I was hoping that if I took away this outlet for myself, I could re-direct my time and energy into a novel or something else |

| that I could try to get published. Third, I was growing tired of the entire lifestyle I was living. I had just come back from weekends of tubing and Vegas, two trips that I should have made me happier than Jeffrey Jones at the Never Land ranch, and I didn't enjoy either of them. I was feeling a need to move on from this stage of my life, and nothing was more representative of it than this column. Plus, Jeff and Mary-Margaret had finally broken off there relationship...without all of the easy jokes at their expense, I wasn't sure that I could even come up with 500 words. Although there have been few obvious changes, I am in a completely different place than I was six weeks ago. I am working again at another in a seemingly endless series of crap jobs. Nothing makes you feel the need for a creative outlet more than an office cubicle. I've also recently moved into a new frat house with Blake, Dave, Mexican Jeff (Mexi-Jeff), and Caucasian Jeff (Cauc-Jeff). Blake and Mexi-Jeff have always been great for column fodder and I'm thinking that Dave has the potential to become an internet legend. Plus, I'm fully expecting Mexi-Jeff to have a breakdown any day and demand that he is the only Jeff allowed in the house, a la Brad from the Real World. Also, I had very little luck getting my novel moving. Writing in any form seems like a better idea than not writing at all. I am still planning to move into a new stage of life, my drunken behavior this past weekend not withstanding...I mean two nights with memory loss is not exactly a good start. I am going to put some serious effort into growing up, but hopefully that shouldn't negatively effect this column. I may end up straying into new topics or just writing an endless series of NBA columns, but I should always be able to find something to write about. If all else fails, Jeff and Mary-Margaret appear to be back together. They're always good for a cheap laugh. |
