Drinking on a Monday...
And So Begins the Slow Descent
March 24, 2004
I am not sure if there is anything that can make you feel like more of an alcoholic than finding yourself sitting on a bar stool next to Rob McD (who may be 19) and Nath as they turn the lights out at Valhalla early Tuesday morning. Certainly makes you re-examine some life choices. It wasn't quite as depressing as it sounds. I was a) only out on a Monday because we went to watch Alex's open mike (he was hilarious), b) only at Valhalla because Liz was working her weekly shift behind the bar, c) only still out at 2 AM because I wanted to let my roommate hump himself out so I didn't have to listen to a squeaking bed when I got home, and d) not actually drunk. Even so, all of these factors weren't quite enough to reassure me that my life was on the right path when I found myself on the Rice campus, being lectured by a drunk U Court representative about the hazards of drinking and driving at two in the morning. What percentage of law students across the country found themself in a more depressing situation at that time last night? Maybe 0.1%? Is it even that high? Even so, I managed to make it to most of my class this morning. I think that ahs to at least count for something...

Despite the depressing lead, last night was far from a complete loss. I finally got to see Alex do his stand-up routine. I can say that he was, without question, the best of the ten or so comics that we saw. He was certainly funny, but I think I could of drawn more laughs at a funeral than half of those comics did last night. If you are in town, you should definitely try to see Alex perform, but for the sake of your

sanity, make sure that you call him first to find out what time he is going on. Most of the other comics not only failed to draw laughs, but also bordered on being delusional . I'm sure that there is a special circle in hell reserved for unfunny comics.

Another good thing to come out of last night was finding a new reason to bash Blake. What was with the whole ditching the group thing befoee the last bar? At least when I'm being anti-social I tell you all first. We're only days away from a full-fledged Jeff-style call out.

But the best idea to come out of last night was a preliminary plan for a March Madness-style drinking contest. Yes, this idea probably should be left to the colelge students...but when has that stopped us from pursuing an idea before? The basic gist of the idea would be to match people up in one-on-one drinking contests for the amusement of the group as a whole. Each person would drink the same drink at the same rate, with the first person to pass out, throw up, or cry "No mas" being declared the loser. Matchups would be randomly determined with weight handicaps being in effect (I weigh 1.5 times what Hari does, so I'd have to have 3 drinks to every 2 of his). We would like to start with a 16 person bracket, and try to have one match a weekend. This would hopefully allow the winners' bodies enough time to recover between matches. And, yes, I am possibly entering a very self-destructed stage of my life. Cheryl is going to be drinking contest commissioner, because she was seeing all of the angles at least five steps ahead of me. If you are interested in participating, let me know. If you aren't, don't worry. We'll eventually convince you anyways.
