| BACKWASH. I suggest that this is a euphemistic term for the gravimetric turbulence created in the wake of Colonial and Cylon space vessels. BOOSTER. Generally, a device for increasing force, power, pressure, or effectiveness. Specifically, it refers to several parts of the vipers engines. I suggest that the first booster is the gravimagnetic accelerator, located just before the exhaust nozzle. This would make the second booster the afterburner. BORATON. Specifically the fire-fighting compound utilized aboard Colonial vessels. It can be distributed as foam, a liquid, or a mist. Most modern fire fighting foams consist of fluorinated surfactants, which in turn are composed of carbon chain compounds based on tetraflouroethylene. These have a low surface tension and positive spreading coefficient, allowing them to form a smothering film on top of more lightweight fuels. Due to the root of the word, we can also assume that there is a thermal component to the compound as well, perhaps combining the above properties with that of carbon dioxide as a fire fighting agent. From the Latin boreas meaning the cold North wind. BRACERS. Also, Braces. Personal restraint devices, usually composed of two or more textile straps with a locking mechanism, designed to maintain an individuals stability while seated or prone within a vehicle. BRIDGE. The command and control deck of a ship. (Details) There are a number of design philosophies that impact the placement of the bridge on ships and the operations conducted from it, and presumably this will be the case on starships as well. In the case of Colonial warships, the bridge also serves as the Combat Information Center, and during the Second Exodus, the bridge of the Battlestar Galactica served as the center of Fleet control as well, although it did have to designate separate fleet control centers off of the bridge, including communications and navigation centers. As it is probable that all Battlestars were designed to serve as flagships for large fleet operations, the Galactica was well equipped to handle these new duties. The Bridge of the Galactica consists of four levels. The main level provides access to the other levels, as well as egress and exit via four doorways. The only main system on this level is the operations support station, to the immediate right of the command pedestal. The lower level consists of ships subsystems monitor and control stations, and can be entered by a doorway to starboard or from the main deck via the flight deck. On the centerline, above the lower level, but below the main deck and command pedestal is the flight deck. This is where attitude, articulation and guidance functions for the Galactica are controlled. Directly behind the flight deck is the command pedestal, with its primary operations console. Two other features are the communications bay, at the far starboard side of the bridge, which monitors all Fleet communications and controls all communication functions of the Galactica and its supporting craft, and the war room, which is a euphemistic term for the large-scale tactical display station, located at the aft end of bridge behind and off-set slightly to port from the command pedestal.duties. |
