SOCIAL STUDIES World Geography (Prerequisite: Social Studies 7) Grade level: 8, 9 The major emphasis will be to help students develop knowledge for interpreting different kinds of maps, and plot locations based on longitude and latitude. These objectives will be accomplished through classroom instruction and activities, as well as simulations. World History to 1500 AD (Prerequisite: Social Studies 7) Grade level: 8, 9 (Standard Weight) Students explore history and geography from early civilization to the Middle Ages. Students explore the historical development of people, places, and patterns of life from ancient times until about 1500 A.D., using maps, pictures, stories, diagrams, charts, chronological skills, inquiry/research skills, and technology skills. World History : 1500 AD to Present (Prerequisite: World History to 1500 AD or World Geography) Grade level: 9, 10 (Standard Weight) Students explore history and geography from the late Middle Ages (1500 A.D.) to the present with emphasis on Western Europe. Geographic influences on history continue to be explored but increasing attention is given to political boundaries that developed with the evolution of nation-states. Significant attention will be given to the ways in which scientific and technological revolutions affected economic, social, and political changes. Students will develop skills in chronological thinking, historical comprehension, and historical analysis. United States History (Prerequisite: World Geography and/or World History) Grade level: 11 (Standard Weight) This course is a general survey of American history from the discovery of America to the present. After a review of events from the exploration and colonization period through westward expansion, major emphasis will be placed on events beginning at the Civil War period and will continue to the present. Current events are an important part of class discussion. Learning activities include lecture, cooperative learning, mapwork, debates, speeches, and research projects. AP U.S. History (Prerequisite: World Geography and/or World History, Teacher recommendation) Grade level: 11 (High Weight) Dual credit United States History surveys United States history from its beginning to the present. Students are responsible for purchasing their own AP textbook. United States Government (Prerequisite: World History or World Geo., & US History) Grade level: 12 (Standard Weight) This course is a study of the American constitutional system of government at the local, state, and national level. Particular attention is placed upon the government of Virginia and the role that citizens play in their government. Honors United States Government (Prerequisite: World Hist., World Geo., US History, B average, Teacher recommendation) Grade level: 12 (High Weight) This course is a study of the American constitutional system of government with attention upon the government of Virginia.
