| The Complete Guide to Registering for and Taking the Official GED Test at Galax High School How old do I have to be to take the test? Examinees must be 18 years old or older. In special circumstances, examinees can be 16 or 17 years old. If this is your case, please contact the principal of the high school in the city or county where you live. Where do I register to take the GED? Examinees can register at the testing center or with any local area GED registrar. If you just moved and your ID shows an old address, you must show proof (a telephone bill or other bill showing current address) that you have lived at your current address for at least 30 days. Is there a registration deadline? Yes, you must register by the Wednesday before the test date. It is OK to register early for the test. It is usually best to call ahead for an appointment or office hours. What do I need to have with me when I register to take the GED? Examinees must show 2 forms of ID to register, one picture ID issued by a state or federal government agency (drivers licence, learners, military ID, immigration card, passport, etc) and one other official ID(social security card, birth certificate, etc). Credit cards & school ID cards cannot be used as ID. How much does the test cost? The total test battery cost $35 in cash or money order (made out to Galax High School). The testing center cannot take personal checks or credit cards. We can take checks from organizations who may wish to pay for your test. They only need to contact the testing center to arrange payment. Each test costs $7 individually if you need to retake a particular test. Scholarships can be obtained for testing the first time if you meet income qualifications and attend GED preparation classes. Where do I take the test? The local testing center is located at Galax High School. However, if the dates and times are not convenient to you, you may test at any official testing site in Virginia. You must contact that testing site to arrange testing. Certain month during the year the test is given at Carroll County High School on Saturday. How long does the test take? The entire test can take up to 7 hours. If the test is given on 2 week nights (5pm), examinees must show up both nights to take the entire test. Twice a year the tests are given on a Friday night (6pm) & Saturday morning (8am). At Carroll County High School, the test starts at 9am. What should I bring to the test? Examinees must show up for testing with the picture IDs that was used to register, their registration form, and payment, if you did not pay when you registered. All other materials will be provided, such as paper, pen, and calculator. Food and electronic devices are not allowed in the testing room. Cell phones are not allowed in the testing room. What do I have to make on the test to pass? In order to pass the GED, you must score no lower than 410 on each of the 5 sub-tests and have an average score of 450 or better. When do I get my test results? Test results come to you in the mail within one week after you take the GED. The chief examiner usually receives test results 2 business days after testing. Extra official copies can be obtained for a $5 fee from your local testing center. (Transcript Request form) Your scores can be sent to an employer or college of your choice by written request only. You can also print an eTranscript by going to www.ged123.org. What do I need to do if I do not pass one or more tests or make the minimum average score? You can retest any subtest 1 months or 30 days after your last test date. You can take each subtest a maximum of 3 times in one calender year. You do not need to retake your entire test unless your scores were all below 410. You should only register to take the tests in which you did not make 410 or above. If your average is too low but you made 410 or higher on each test, you could retake any sub-test you wish. Registration procedures remain the same. Where can I get help studying for the GED? Each county or city usually has an adult education class available for free specifically to help people pass the GED. You can contact your local school board office for more information about these classes. Study guides are also available online for a fee. Can I take the GED in my native language? The GED is given in English, Spanish, and French. Check with your testing center to see if they have the GED in the language in which you wish to test. Some locations need up to a months notice to obtain a copy of the GED in your language. |
