SOCIAL STUDIES Humanities (Prerequisite: World Studies Class) Grade level: 10,11,12 (Standard Weight) This is a social science survey course including the following units of study: Contemporary Affairs traces the social, political and economic origins of current world events and examines their importance to the United States and to the international community. The student will examine various forces of social change and analyze their impact upon society. In addition to major conflicts, such social institutions as family and religion will also be studied. Major responsibilities of the student will be news-gathering and interpretation. Economics examines how society produces, exchanges and consumes goods and services. Emphasis is placed on the free enterprise system; however, other major economic systems are explored. Also, major economic problems such as unemployment, inflation, entrepreneurship and labor-management relations are examined. Sociology is about people--how they act, react, and interact both in their everyday lives and under extraordinary circumstances. Like other sciences, sociology relies on a set of concepts, many of them everyday expressions that have specific meanings to sociologists. Society, culture, status, roles, norms, values, conformity, and deviance are some of the concepts introduced in this course. Class topics will include: folkways, family, religion, education, human growth and development, and social problems. Psychology is the study of the fundamentals of modern psychology. The theories of various important psychologists will be reviewed. The mechanics of the human mind and thought patterns will also be examined. Topics will include: history of psychology, how the brain works, use of testing in psychology, learning, emotion, and mental health. |
