| ENGLISH English 8 (Prerequisite: Language Arts 7) Grade level: 8 English 8 will emphasize oral language, literature, writing, and research. Emphasis will be placed on interviewing techniques; reading a variety of literary genres for factual/interpretive comprehension; writing in a variety of forms such as narrative, expository, and persuasive; and researching to analyze mass media messages. Honors English 8 (Prerequisite: Language Arts 7, teacher recommendation) Grade level: 8 Honors English 8 includes all materials covered in English 8. However, the Honors course is more extensive with additional requirements in composition and reading. The English Department of Galax High School requires that students who are enrolled in Honors English classes for the year 2005-2006 must read selected books during the summer. This is an advanced class in which the students are asked to study challenging issues and materials. It is the responsibility of the students to acquire the reading material and study guide prior to leaving school for the summer. Otherwise students may be scheduled in standard English. The reading material must be read by the first day of English class. Students will have a test or a project based on the summer reading. Student scores on the test or project will weigh heavily on the first six weeks� grading period. Students will also sign a pledge that they have read the assigned material. Requests for alternate reading material must be filed with the principal by July 1. English 9 (Prerequisite: English 8) Grade level: 9 (Standard Weight) English 9 involves a study of grammar, composition, and literature. Grammar includes studies of parts of speech, parts of the sentence, mechanics, sentence structure, and usage. Speaking, listening, and vocabulary are also emphasized. Composition covers paragraphs, informal essays, summaries, reports, letters, and various literary forms. Literature units are taught on the short story, poetry, the novel, and drama. Students are introduced to different types of literature (biography, epic, novel, etc.) and to literary terms (alliteration, satire, irony, etc.) Research is introduced in English 9. Honors English 9 (Prerequisite: Recommendation of teacher, and "A" or"B" in English 8) Grade level: 9 (High Weight) Honors English 9 includes all material covered in English 9. However, the Honors Course is more intensive with additional requirements in composition, parallel reading, creative writing, and speech. Honors students also complete a research project.
