I notice a lot that nobody ever really knows what nationality I am. I mean, it's obvious that I'm a mutt, but I think it bothers people that they don't know exactly what the hell is going on in my gene pool.
They usually figure it's of some sort of Hispanic or Middle Eastern decent, but then my name kinda throws them off a bit. I don't have a very ethnic-sounding name... and there aren't enough vowels for it to be Hispanic, and too many vowels for it to be Middle Eastern.
Okay, so I'll save you the trouble of guessing - Filipino and Black... I can show you which half of my body is which, but I think it goes without saying ;)
I get a number of different guesses from people... I'm from California, so everyone there thought I was Mexican or Indian. When I'm down in Florida, they figure I'm Cuban or Haitian... and here in New York, folks think I'm... ... ...Jewish. J/k. Puerto Rican, that's right.
I don't get offended by any of it. I enjoy it, actually; I like to keep people in suspense. Because nobody wants to just come right out and ask, but you can tell they really, really want to know. So they just kind of stammer around it, you know, trying to be clever.
So they go, "Hey, where you from anyway?" knowing damn well that based on my name and my lack of a discernable accent that I'm just a friggin' Yankee American.
So I tell them, "Oh, I'm from California."
"No, I mean, where are you FROM?"
"California..."
"No, I mean, where are your parents from?" (Like my parents were born in some crazy, exotic island and had weird fucked-up last names and just decided to give me a simple American name.)
"So then I really piss them off, "Oh, you mean where am I from like 'where are my parents from' kind of where am I from...ohhhh....
"Well, my mom's in California and my dad's from Jersey." :)
