TRIPS to ADJUNTAS

The LAST TRIP

On Tuesday January 29 2002 the scaffold workers went on strike. So we went on a short sight seeing trip. Up hwy 10 from Ponce through Adjuntas and continuing to Utuado. There we turned east on 123 and then 111. At Lago Caonillas we turned north on route 140. We continued in search of a ferry that would take us across Lago Dos Bocas. We turned back in search of Jungle Janes Restaraunt, to find it is only open on the weekend. While at Jungle Janes we learned that the ferry was only for people and couldn't carry vehicles. There are some very steep inclines on route 140, I guess they don't have to worry about snow. After back tracking to Utuado we got back on hwy 10 and continued to Arecibo. We finished our trip around the west end of the island traveling along hwy 2,passing through Aguadilla, Mayaguez, and Guayanilla.

Route 111 and 140 were barely 1 lane wide. They were paved however. We came to the conclusion that they are paved to keep the jungle from reclaiming the road way. The corners are so tight that the trucks blow their horns so you can get out of the way. Also the trailers were very short.

Again this photo doesn't do justice to the steepness of this drive way.

There is a plantation on top of those hills.

These are picture of Lago Caonillas

This little bug is the same size as a Lady Bug.

This dam sits on the north end of Lago Caonillas. It was buit in 1948.

The pipe visible in this picture went down hill to a generating station, about 2 miles away.

There were 2 of these birds flying near the dam.

A grassy hill side.

This 55 gallon drum was on the walk way at Jungle Janes. I took this photo because Barbara Franqui, a woman I worked with for 23 years at CFAC has property there.

What Montana boy would have thought that bananas grow up side down and have a small flower on the upper end?

This bamboo grew 40-50 feet tall.

This appeared to be a limestone face with small eroded passages.

This is the Atlantic Ocean, at Arecibo. There is a lot more surf here than on the southern side at Ponce.
