I got my first guitar and began taking lessons the summer before starting junior high. That guitar was an $18 Stella. I started writing poetry a couple years later in high school. It took another twenty years for me to begin combining the writing with the playing. My tunesmithing inspiration came from the work of Bob Dylan and Neil Young.
Before the songwriting muse struck me, I had tried to develope myself into a jazz rock guitarest. That was back in my acid days in San Francisco. I never did get that scene together. So I moved back to the East Coast. When the muse hit, I made do with a battered old Yamaha acoustic, and a bamboo flute bought at a craft show. That was all I needed.
