hohenschwangau.jpg (11970 bytes) Hohenschwangau Castle, located on the southern tip of Germany in the town of Schwangau, was constructed in the 12th century. The builders and lords of the castle were the Knights of Schwangau. The Knights died out in the 16th century & the castle was exposed to ruin. During the Napoleonic wars, the castle was badly damaged & was purchased by the Crown Prince Maximilian, later King Maximilian II, father of King Ludwig II.

Hall of Heroes

The pictures are based on drawings of the legend of the Wilkina Saga, about Dietrich of Berne. The bronze centerpieces were gifts to King Ludwig I of Bavaria.

The Tasso-Room

This was the King's bedroom. It was painted according to motifs of an Italian poet. The pictures illustrate the tale of Rinaldo and Armida of "La Gerusalemme Liberta."

As you can see, the two castles of Schwangau are very close together, both belonging to the King Ludwig II of Bavaria.
